UBAY – A 40-year old rice trader was shot dead by still unidentified assailants Tuesday noon in barangay Gabi, Ubay town, while the victim’s driver is hospitalized after sustaining two gunshot wounds.
The fatality, identified as Bonifacio Bayron, 40, a resident of barangay Corazon, San Miguel town, was on his way home aboard a motorcycle driven by one Joselito Dinulan, 25, when two unidentified men, riding in tandem aboard another motorcycle, accosted them along the provincial road in barangay Gabi.
The backrider, not wearing anything to mask his face, was the one who fired upon the victims, hitting Bayron twice on the lower torso. Two bullets exited Bayron’s body and wounded Dinulan on his left leg.
The victims crashed on the pavement after being hit with the gunshots, but Dinulan who was only wounded on the left leg, was able to run away from the assailants.
In an interview with dyRD Balita, Dinulan said he was able to catch a glimpse of Bayron being robbed by the suspects.
Dinulan was able to seek help and was brought to Gov. Celestino Gallares Regional Hospital in Tagbilaran City, while Bayron was brought to the nearby San Miguel Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
According to the surviving driver, he believes the motive of the suspects was to rob Bayron, who may have been known to be buying palay that day in Ubay.
Police could not yet determine the amount of money the highway robbers took from the victim.
