‘State of calamity’ declared in Surigao del Norte province, city
By Cris Diaz

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Feb. 11 (PNA) -- A state of calamity has been declared in the province of Surigao del Norte and the city of Surigao following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake Friday night, a provincial official said Saturday.

Provincial information officer, Mary Jul Espuerte, said that Surigao del Norte Governor Sol Matugas has also declared no classes in all levels, both in private and public schools, in Surigao City and Surigao del Norte.

She said all commercial buildings, which have shown cracks, were ordered closed as the local government initiated a rapid assessment of damages incurred in the temblor.

Espuerte said that the city and some parts of the province are without electricity and water supply.

She noted that the Lipata Terminal, which connects the “roll-on, roll-off” (RORO) for both private and public utility vehicles, has also been temporarily closed.

The “Lipata Port” was not damaged, but a bridge leading to the port terminal was closed due to damage from the quake, she added.

Espuerte said the provincial government is coordinating with various government line agencies in a bid to bring back normalcy to the city and the province as soon as possible.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck the eastern seacoast of Surigao City, 300 km. northeast of here, past 10:00 p.m. Friday. The quake was tectonic in origin, Philippine volcanologists have said.

A report reaching here said four people, most of them male, and an octogenarian died when they were rushed for treatment in various hospitals there.

About 80 people were initially treated as outpatients at the height of the earthquake that delivered more than 100 aftershocks since Friday evening, with magnitudes ranging from 2.0 to 3.7.

Cagayan de Oro City, which is 300 km. southwest of Surigao City, felt the temblor at Intensity 3. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
