Satellite images on Sept. 17 and Aug. 28, which were taken from the website of United Nations Institute for Training and Research, show the extent of damage from fighting in Barangay Santa Catalina in Zamboanga City. The map of the UN Operational Satellite Applications Program was requested by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. http://www.inquirer.net/

A Fallen Soldier's Prayer

The soldier stood and faced his God which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and Said,"No, Lord, I guess I ain't...because those of us who carry guns can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was tough,
and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.

But, I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep,
and I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here...
They never wanted me around except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne Where the Saints had often trod.

As the soldier waited quietly, for the judgment of his God:

"Step forward now you soldier, walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, you've done your time in Hell."

---
Gone but not forgotten, rest in peace soldiers!

LOOKOUT ON A TREE. A policeman from the PNP Special Action Force jumps off a tree in Zamboanga City after getting a good look at members of the Moro National Liberation Front. Government forces earlier engaged MNLF members in a close encounter, killing one commander in a mangrove area after a brief chase in Barangay Talon-Talon on Monday. Even at the last minute, a captured MNLF gunman shows defiance as government forces bring them to a police station in Zamboanga City to be processed on Thursday, September 26. About 17 more suspected MNLF members were taken into custody in Barangay Sta. Barbara. This brings to more than 200 the number of Misuari followers arrested as of 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the Zamboanga City police. As of Wednesday evening, the military said at least 125 MNLF members, 15 soldiers, five police officers and 13 civilians were killed in the conflict. Chino Gaston, http://www.gmanetwork.com/

Army soldiers wear gas masks as they conduct clearing operations in the stench-ridden ruins of Barangay Sta. Catalina in Zamboanga City on Thursday, September 26. The smell of decaying bodies greeted the government forces as they patrolled among destroyed houses, the site of heavy fighting between government forces and MNLF gunmen. A remaining band of defiant MNLF fighters believed to be led by commander Habier Malik is still engaging troops in close quarter battles. AFP/Frederick Alvarez, http://www.gmanetwork.com/

A PNP Special Action Force commando keeps watch over the mangrove areas of Zamboanga City on Friday, September 27, for any signs of MNLF commander Habier Malik and his remaining band of fighters. AFP information chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said troops continue to hunt down the remaining MNLF gunmen in clearing operations in several 'areas of interest' which he refused to identify. The Philippine flag flies at half-mast Saturday on a mosque that was retaken by government troops from Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels who laid siege to Zamboanga City. About 200 were killed and more than 100,000 residents were displaced in the two-week conflict. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/
