TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol – Rains may seem a blessing to rural communities but it could also be a downside to urbanized centers, if the recent dengue surveillance reports could be a basis.

According to reports from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) Tagbilaran City and highly populated areas near show more patients afflicted with dengue, bolstering claims that people in heavily populated areas have more worry about the disease.

The same report furnished by the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) based at the PHO showed Tagbilaran City leading the areas where most number of dengue patients at 63 cases and four deaths as monitored.

The same report also showed Panglao, Talibon, Dauis, Calape, Loon, Pilar, Carmen, Bilar, Antequera, Danao, Sagbayan, Sierra Bullones and Maribojoc having notable cases of dengue as monitored from January to the third week of June this year.

As to dengue death cases, after Tagbilaran ranks Calape with two, while Talibon, Antequera, Dauis and Loon with singe deaths.

As to affectation, =https://www.google.com/url?q=http://tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com/index.php%3Ftopic%3D1314.0&sa=U&ei=XDH5T9__BKGG6QHVw5jyBg&ved=0CBUQFjAI&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNFHhUK4REqCF7GGLxPPXPLF8_OlcwTagbilaran City still at 63 cases, followed by Panglao at 24, Talibon (19), Dauis (18), Loon (8), Pilar and Carmen (7) Sagbayan, Ubay, Bilar and Danao with 6.

Even then, health authorities urge communities to get into the fighting groove and join the government in eliminating dengue.

Dr. Aida Calamba of the Department of Education said “4S is still the most potent weapon against the disease.”

By 4 S, she means Search and Destroy mosquito breeding areas, Seek early treatment, Self Preservation and Saying no to indiscriminate fogging, the lady physician at the division office narrated.

Last year, a notably slow year as to dengue affectation, Bohol only records 146 cases topped by Talibon at 25 cases, followed by Tagbilaran at 14, Loon and Dauis at 9 each and Carmen at 8 cases. Deaths then were noted in Bien Unido, Mabini and Tagbilaran.

In 2010, admittedly a high peaking dengue cycle year, Bohol tallied 2,647 cases, accounting 25 deaths.

Tagbilaran City topped the count with 645 cases, 6 deaths followed by Dauis at 126 cases and 3 deaths.

Among the listed towns with dengue cases in 2010 are Loon (115 cases and 3 deaths), Talibon (99 cases and 2 deaths), Carmen (96 cases) and calape, Maribojoc and Panglao each with 80 cases.
Romans 8:38-39
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

  • as for the 4s as the most potent weapon against dengue, what does "indiscriminate fogging" mean?

there's also much going around, verbally and in the internet highway, about the potency of apple juice against dengue.  if ever, it is not mentioned in any way by the doctor.  how true is this, by the way?  just the same, i play safe by insisting that the kids take apple juice.

Indiscriminate fogging refers to the spraying of insecticide in habitats of mosquitoes; tho this tactic has been implemented , there should be a control in its use. The use of fogging actually creates super mosquitoes who are resistant to the sprays. Other effects of excessive fogging is the destruction of predators of the mosquitoes per se bats, frogs, sparrows and other predatory insects. The sprays can also be lethal to humans if ever the sprays are inhaled or get into the water systems because these sprays have pyrethrins and malathion, which can cause muscular as well as respiratory problems.

The physician, as quoted in this article, was referring to the limited use of fogging and abstaining from excessive fogging, which has the propensity of causing negative side effects to the overall human population, considering the close proximity of the mosquito habitat to that of human living settings.

The best preventative , Isles, is making sure the kids are wearing long attire, and use insect/bug spray to ward off mosquitoes.

dengue is caused by a virus, the treatment we give is to reduce the symptoms, while we allow the body to fight the virus.
applejuice is rich in vitamins that may help in the boosting of the immune system, pero, the direct link of apple juice fighting the virus is unsupported.

but if the kids like to drink it, i-hatag na lang. :)

  • interesting, i just read into this right now. apparently, the tawa tawa leaves, if boiled in hot water, have the ability to strengthen the blood platelets, the megakaryocytes, of the body. the tawa tawa leaves don't fight dengue, per se, however, it reduces the systemic effects of dengue by preventing the excessive lysis of platelets.

tawa tawa leaves help in the symptomatic alleviation , diay. interesting pod. :)

  • even so, it is best for the patient, who is afflicted with dengue, to go to the nearest hospital to have platelet transfusion rather than to risk further systemic complications.

  • understandable.  the best way is still to consult a doctor.  as for tawa-tawa (snakeweed, cat's hair)...

...here's something by a philippine national paper columnist (only for curiosity's sake):

It took only two days of camote tops decoction, two tabelespoons of papaya-leaf paste, and another two days of more talbos ng kamote and tawa-tawa tea to win the battle against dengue.

Eventually I would find that tawa-tawa has already been commercialized. Bottles of tawa-tawa capsules are now sold at a Tiendesitas stall. I can't say that they're as effective as a fresh bunch of leaves, twigs and roots that have been boiled, as had proved effective for my son. And as it did for a writer-friend who had been hospitalized for nearly a week until I told her about tawa-tawa. Like me, she asked for a friend in Mindanao to send her a bunch. And she came out of that hospital in three days.

There should be no harm in trying tawa-tawa capsules. We should all recall how lagundi, among all our other herbal concoctions, has now been accepted as a pharmaceutical, although it certainly took some time. Like the truth, the herbal cures are out there, just in our own backyards.

American doctors much like Pinoy ones claim there is no known cure (as of yet) for dengue (like any other disease caused by mosquito bite, e.g. encephalitis)... but they all order IVs (hydration) to their patients while some go to the distance of telling their patients to drink a lot of apple juice (in city hospitals like Cebu) and tawa-tawa (in Rural places like Loon) if available. Many are becoming believers of the benefits of tawa-tawa because many people claimed it cured their children before. Tawa-tawa saved my cousin when doctors gave up on him many years ago. My cousin is now in his 40s.  8)
