A Chinese vessel brutally rammed a Philippines fishing boat, killing one and leaving four missing, the authorities said yesterday.
The boat, which set out from the northern coastal town of Bolinao in Pangasinan province last Monday, sank two days later, said Mr Benito Ramos, Chief of Office of Civil Defence.
"Of the eight fishermen aboard, four were plucked out of sea only yesterday, but one of them died in a hospital," Mr Ramos was quoted as saying by AFP news agency. "Four more are still missing."
Mr Ramos added that the fishermen, who were rescued, believed the vessel which collided with their fishing boat was Chinese.
Embassy officials in China were not available for comment yesterday.
The incident occurred north of Scarborough Shoal, where the Philippines and China have been engaged in a tense stand off-since April. -
