A tornado hit Sandingan Island, Loon town ripping away some 40 houses and trees in two villages.
Powerlines in some parts of barangays Calayugan Norte and Calayugan Sur were cut when the tornado hit the area Saturday noon .
Worst hit is barangay Calayugan Norte, where 29 homes were damaged with 5 of which totally destroyed.
Calayugan Norte has 659 residents with 135 households.
The tornado likewise wrecked at least 11 homes in neighboring barangay Calayugan Sur.
As of yesterday (June 19), the provincial government's Quick Reaction Team was dispatched by Gov. Erico Aumentado together with teams from the Provincial Disaster and Coordinating Council, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine National Red Cross and staff of the Governor's Office.
Calayugan Sur barangay captain Tomas Marañon in an interview over dyRD's Action Line yesterday said the tornado, estimated to 50-meter wide, came with a heavy downpour.
The windstorm lasted for less than 3 minutes, according to Marañon.
He said residents whose houses were totally shattered had to temporarily stay with relatives.
One fishing vessel was smashed by a tree that fell in the course of the tornado.
Marañon said the local government unit was not able to respond until Monday as reports about the tornado was made known through a doctor now residing in the United States after an e-mail was sent to him by a brother who resides in Sandingan Island.
Canned goods, rice and foodstuffs were distributed yesterday by the Quick Reaction Team.
The provincial government had assured assistance in rebuilding some of the destroyed houses.
Sandingan Island has eight barangays.
