Phivolcs said Intensity V, so far the strongest recorded from this quake, is "generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Many sleeping people are awakened. Some are frightened, some run outdoors.
"Strong shaking and rocking felt throughout the building. Hanging objects swing violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably. Shaking of leaves and twigs of trees are noticeable."
Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from the quake but no damage has been reported so far. The quake struck at a depth of 52 kilometers.
Speaking to ANC, Phivolcs executive director Renato Solidum said a movement in either the Philippine Fault Zone or the Philippine Trench may have triggered the quake.
He noted that the tremor is not related to the magnitude 7.2 quake that struck Bohol last October 15, and no tsunami alert has been raised so far.
"These are different earthquake generators from the Bohol fault," Solidum said. "The magnitude of the quake is not very large so it is not enough to trigger any tsunami." --
