School officials never learn from lessons in the past.
Twenty-eight young grade schoolers of the Nueva Estrella Elementary School in Bien Unido town were rushed to the hospital Thursday morning when they started vomiting and complained of stomach pains after eating home-made pulboron.
Three of the victims are still under observation at the Talibon district hospital while the rest were sent home after they appeared feeling well.
Dr. Harold Gallego, the hospital chief, said they are still determining the real cause of the poisoning. The laboratory test will be known this week.
Victims said the pulboron which is made from a combination of starch, margarine, milk and sugar, smelled of soap.
The Bien Unido police is now detaining the pulboron vendor for investigation.
The provincial government had already sent its Quick Reaction Team to assist the victims and provide the necessary medical needs.
A Department of Education memorandum circular had banned the vending of home-made food items in schools after the tragic San Jose, Mabini food poisoning reported as caused by a home –made cassava cake. More than a hundred elementary grade school pupils died in that accident.
DepEd ordered the establishment of canteens inside the school premises and prohibits children to go out and buy foods during recess from outside the school sources.
The order had since been disregarded as vendors continue to sell foods around school premises.
