No monopoly

While incumbent congressmen are doing everything they can to prevent the holding of the next election, there is no doubt that politicians on the local level and their supporters are already setting their sights on next year’s elections.

It is easy to understand why the congressmen, especially those whose terms are expiring next year, want the postponement if not the cancellation of the election. They want to hold on to power and they are willing to do so at all cost.

This does not mean that they can do so just because they are holding power. Any disruption in the schedule of the election will not be good for the country. This will mean that the situation is not normal because the schedule for the election cannot be followed.

It will also be a cause for unrest especially in areas where the people are asking for change. If the election is delayed, these people will be easy targets for recruitment by those who want to effect change through extra-constitutional methods.

Even within the administration, there has been a jockeying for position by pro-GMA parties on the right to be anointed as official candidate in next year’s election. This is not felt so much in Bohol because Lakas has been acknowledged as the undisputed administration party in the province.

And yet, this does not mean the other parties in the administration coalition will not be fielding their own candidates in Bohol. For one, Kampi led by Camarines Rep. Luis Villafuerte is aggressively recruiting members in the province as part of its expansion activities.

In case people do not know, the President’s original party is Kampi but she was merely adopted by Lakas when she run for vice-president under Speaker Joe de Venecia. Lakas members who feel they should be the administration bets are in for a big surprise.

We will not be surprised too if the Liberal Party under Manila Mayor Lito Atienza will also make its move especially since it wants to prove that it has the numbers in its rivalry with the faction led by Sen. Franklin Drilon.

The recruitment activities of these two parties may be viewed as a divisive activity to those who are outside the administration coalition. In reality however, it shows that the administration is getting stronger because it can no longer accommodate the interested candidates for the local positions in next year’s election.

This will be good for Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo because it will boost the chances of the administration ticket in the senatorial elections. Although there is the fear of junking some of the candidates who belong to other parties, this will also be an opportunity for the administration to weed out misfits who cannot toe the line.

Lakas does not have a monopoly in the administration ticket.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
