Thousands pray for peace, support during Bohol rally
Tagbilaran City (27 June 2005) -- In a sweeping show of support, Boholanos who wore white shirts of solidarity, numbering thousands converged at the Carlos P. Garcia Complex in Tagbilaran City Thursday June 23 to muster a force to invoke the King of Peace for what they believe would be the only solution to a brewing turmoil in the country.

Although organizers stress it was a prayer rally for peace and development, it failed to hide a good number of intentions: to visibly show a gesture of support to embattled President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Earlier, Governor Erico Aumentado said, "we need prayers to help her to survive destabilization moves. Our concerns may be parochial, but if the Arroyo administration will be brought down, our mega projects including the Panglao Alternate International Airport Project might be stalled or even shelved,"Bohol showed an overwhelming support for the President making her win a wide margin over her strongest rival during the recent presidential race.

However, recently, the Arroyo Administration was rocked to its foundations after opposition stalwarts began brandishing wiretapped tapes of a conversation allegedly done by Arroyo and a man presumed to be COMELEC Commissioner Garcillano.
Though a lot of people said there was nothing criminal about the conversation, it showed moral impropriety.

Retired Armed Forces General Fortunato Abat, who has been openly criticizing Mrs. Arroyo set a personal deadline until June 25 for the President to vacate Malacanang.

The political opposition also has been allegedly instigating the masses to steamroll another EDSA as a tool to oust the Presidency.

"The country may be in dire straits; infrastructure projects in other provinces have been stopped or stalled because of lack of funds. But because we have shown her our united support, she has had no qualms in implementing the formula of using funds for slow or non-moving projects elsewhere for Bohol, he said.

Armed Forces of the Philippines Ordinariate, Bishop Leopoldo S. Tumulak in his message called for settling of differences among Filipinos as brothers.

For the ecumenical gathering of Boholanos, he said "though we are divided in a lot of things, we unite for peace."
He then called for the reigning of a brotherly love that celebrates differences capping it bay saying that if we go against the law, we might end up destroying the dream of peace that we have to accomplish.

City School heads, the Department of Education, socio-civic organizations, League of Municipalities of the Philippines, the city government, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, religious organizations, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Sanggunaing Kabataan, the Philippine Army and well meaning Boholanos came to attend to the rally.

Also present were delegations from the Bohol Muslim Community, the Baptist Church, El Shaddai, United church of Christ in the Philippines, Victory Temple Church where their leaders read or recited ecumenical prayers for peace.

The activity was capped by a release doves and peace balloons by Bohol Officials and youth sector leaders. (rac/PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
