New home brings new hope for earthquake survivors

Pantawid Pamilya beneficiary Evangeline Avilla, 43 and her family moved into their temporary shelter in barangay Ubojan in the municipality of Tubigon, Bohol along with other 82 families whose houses were damaged when the 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the province.

“This temporary shelter isa comfortable place to stay. We are now free from the dangers in the tent,” says Evelyn in dialect.

For her and for the rest of her neighbors, the temporary shelters they now occupied protect them fromthe scorching heat of the sun at daytime andfrom coldand prowling animalsat nighttime.
These 83 families stay in these transition houses while waiting for their permanent houses to be done, full of hope that life will get better.

The temporary shelter is implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and supported by DSWD, Provincial Government of Bohol, Municipal Government of Tubigon, and Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman graced the turnover of the 83 temporary shelters on June 21, 2014 together with Bohol Governor Edgardo Chatto, Tubigon Mayor Marlon Amila and Mr. Conrad Navidad, Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM)/Evacuation Support Program (ESP) National Coordinator.

In her message during the turn over, Secretary Soliman appreciated and acknowledged the beneficiaries’ contribution in the realization of the project. “You now own these shelters and you have improved it. This could not be done without your concerted efforts. Thank you for your unity.”

Aside from the temporary shelter, Evelyn also received livelihood assistance from IOM in the form of goods and food stuff for sale that she displays in her porch. She also added some goods to her small sari-sari store using her own money.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VII has already started the process of providing livelihood assistance to these families through its Sustainable Livelihood Program. Within the month of August, the Ubojan temporary shelter residents, including Evelyn will undergo the Community Driven Enterprise Development (CDED)training.
CDED is a framework that integrates business principles and techniques necessary for the implementation of livelihood or enterprise projects with community participatory processes that enable the poor from the target communities to prepare their business plans.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
