Earthquake Update: 87,157 food packs distributed to quake victims in Bohol

Some 87,157 family food packs have been distributed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Provincial Government of Bohol to families affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the province, according to Secretary Dinky Soliman during a press conference Saturday.

According to the DSWD website,  Secretary Soliman was in Bohol Saturday to lead in the distribution of relief packs in isolated areas in the province.

Soliman said that relief distribution in Bohol is now on its second cycle with affected families from quake-hit municipalities receiving initial aid from concerned local government units.

She added that Habitat for Humanity’s Mobile Emergency Response vehicle will be deployed in Bohol to help in disaster relief efforts.

“Habitat for Humanity will build nine tents (9) to serve as temporary hospital facility in Municipalities where hospitals were partially damaged,” Soliman said.

A DSWD Team from Central Office has already conducted rapid assessment of the extent of damage in 27 Municipalities affected by the earthquake.

The Bohol provincial hotlines 09173246600 and 09109455146 are open to receive inquiries and requests for assistance.

According to DSWD as of October 20,  Bohol maintains 64 evacuation centers with 21,250 families or 104,953 persons. A total of 51,614 families or 236,509 persons stay in open spaces or in their friends’ and relatives’ houses.(DSWD) - source: PIA

it's kind of surprising that after 2 weeks since the earthquake international relief organizations like UNICEF, plan international, CRS, world vision, etc. are yet to be seen in bohol. they were very quick in coming to the rescue when typhoon pablo hit davao oriental. i wonder what's taking them so long.

WFP is very visible. The Provincial Government of Bohol has dispatched some 400,000 food packs to quake victims.

good to know that WFP is there at least... it should come as no surprise when LGUs and government agencies like DSWD, Red Cross, etc. are in the forefront of relief operations in major disasters because that is part of their mandate, and the people who run these agencies are paid by tax money. of course, the donors of relief goods deserve a big thank you... i was just wondering why other international relief organizations are sorely missing in the action... i went to cateel, davao oriental 8 months after typhoon pablo hit the area and there were about a dozen international organizations still operating in the area. they should have moved to bohol by now because that is where they are needed.

in today's issue (nov. 3) of philippine daily inquirer, there's a news item about WPF and AusAid giving donations for bohol quake victims. in the jobs section of the same issue, both Plan International and CRS (Catholic Relief Services), both U.S. based international development organizations are hiring staff for their bohol relief project which will be implemented over the next several months... looks like more of the much-needed help is coming.
