Jesus’ Family Tree

Jesus’ family tree may not seem interesting except to historians, but it is miraculous. Jesus’ ancestors included Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and King David. Jacob knew, almost 1800 years before, that the Messiah would descend from his family. Think today about God’s careful planning, over centuries, for Jesus’ arrival in our world.

Presence in the Midst of Crisis

Of all times for the financial health of the world to end up in Intensive Care—just as the holidays entice us to splurge, to buy a little beyond ourselves because gift-buying and gift-giving are expressions of care, appreciation, even remembrance. We bake richer foods at Christmastime. And wrap things in shinier paper. And we like to spend a little more, just because this time is special. It is a time for feasting and lingering. It is a time for extravagance.

There is some justification for extravagance at this time of year. We are celebrating the love of an extravagant God. The Christ Child is the ultimate gift. God’s love is lavish, overflowing. God did not hold back from us, in sending Jesus, the son of God. In that birth we were given God’s very self.

And so, this year in which money is especially the focus of stress and strategy, perhaps we should think in terms of giving the self instead of stuff. God gave God’s self in fairly plain wrapping—the infant of two pilgrims with limited resources. No fine blankets or silky bassinet for Jesus. No huge basket of Ghirardelli’s chocolate treats for his parents. But the presence of that child was so rich and fine that poor shepherds, great intellects from far countries, a pious widow and an old prophet were all drawn to him with tears and joy.

What kind of presence am I to those I love? If I can’t give a hefty gift certificate or even a nice set of bathroom towels this year, how can I be more present to that person for whom I’ve been willing to pull out an overextended credit card in years past? If I can offer no great cash value, then what is left? My stories? My welcome? My precious time for a phone conversation? My visit that lasts longer than it takes to exchange wrapped boxes?

This has been a stressful autumn for my husband and me. Unemployment, then underemployment, then major house repairs, and family too far away to travel to easily. And what we are discovering is that, to come home in the evening and eat a simple meal together, to give a long hug and a word of encouragement, to spend a little more time with our dogs and cats doing nothing but petting and cooing—all of that is lavish enough for us. There will be no expensive dining out this year, no big party thrown for friends. There will be cooking together in the kitchen, looking for the best price on clementines. There will be one trip to a family wedding and brief stops at other relatives on the way back. On each stop we will enter the home and be there with smaller gifts but a bigger sense of us—us coming in the door, giving hugs, having a relaxed conversation, enjoying the presence of those we don’t get to see very often.

We tend to forget, don’t we, that God’s presence is enough. God’s grace is sufficient. We forget that and follow after the big pay-off, the nicer car, the gadget that will make life more convenient, the vacation that will be more romantic and exotic than all the others. We hanker after finer and pricier presents, when the only answer to our real desire is that awesome Presence.

This Christmas seems like a great time to spend more time in that Presence. And more time exploring the power and wonder of our own presence with others.

At this time  , let us pause for a moment and feel the presence of  the Lord." O Lord God
Almighty, thank you for everything for all the blessings. Guide us in all our works today.
Forgive us all our sins.  You said in  1 John 1:9  "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." Amen

Have you ever thought about something you wanted or needed, and suddenly that need was supplied—before you ever even stopped to pray about it?  God knows your needs before you even speak them.  He wants to provide for you and answer the very desires of your heart.  When you put Him first in everything you do, when you faithfully follow His commands, He’ll pour out an extra portion of His goodness and favor upon you.
God is Great!

Joseph’s Doubts Dispelled

In today’s Gospel, Joseph is told in a dream that the baby Mary is carrying is the Messiah. His doubts and fears are dissolved in new-found faith. Have you ever been told something so incredible that you were unable to believe at first? How did you come to believe it?

When we look at the wonder of creation, it is apparent that God is a good gardener Taking care of creation is a moral obligation for us.  Our care for plants, animals and one another reflects our cooperation with the will of God.

In what practical ways can I protect creation?

Do you ever feel like you’ve “lost your fire or enthusiasm?”
We all have times when we feel overwhelmed by the pressures of life, but that’s when we need to stir up what God has placed on the inside of us.  Remember, there are no disadvantages with our God.  You have everything you need to succeed.  No weapon formed against you is ever going to prosper; you just have to stir up the gift inside.  How do you stir it up? By speaking God’s truth and meditating on His word.

'The Voice of My Beloved'
Such joy in today’s readings! The Bride of the Song of Songs praises the Bridegroom, her Beloved. In the Gospel, Mary’s arrival at Elizabeth’s home causes John to leap in Elizabeth’s womb, and both women praise God for His goodness. Have you ever been so overcome with joy, you could hardly contain yourself?

Magnificat
Mary’s Song of Praise
Mary’s Magnificat praises God, especially for his care for the humble and downtrodden. The sign of the Messiah’s coming is the restoration of justice on the earth: The poor and lowly are lifted up and the hungry are fed. God keeps his promises and shows mercy to all people. Read Mary’s song, and think about how it applies to your life.

John the Baptist’s Birth
The Church never speaks about Jesus’ birth without also mentioning his Precursor, John the Baptist, who prepared Israel for his coming. John’s birth was so miraculous that the whole village wanted to know, “What will this child become?” John is present even today, pointing to Jesus as our long-awaited Messiah, reminding us that Jesus is coming soon.

Hellelujah!

St. John the Baptist was no ordinary man. He was the greatest of all the Prophets of God. And he was the LAST prophet. It was he, who announced to all the coming of The Lord God, Jesus Christ.

John the Baptizer was “a man sent from God“ (John 1:6), God's messenger that was “called the prophet of the Highest“ (Luke 1:76). John was not the Light of God, but came “to bear witness of the Light“ (John 1:7). John also confessed that he was not the Christ, but rather said of himself, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness“ (John 1:20,23).

And even John, who was the greatest of all the prophets, declared to the world that he was unfit to even unbuckle the sandal straps of Christ.

Of Shepherds and Angels
Jesus’ birth was attended by the highest and the lowest, by angels and shepherds. While the world slept unaware, our salvation came to us. God became a human being. All heaven knew, and the angels sang praises to God. But the only ones on earth who were aware that night were Jesus’ poor parents, shivering in a shelter for animals, and the lowly shepherds watching their sheep.

December 25, 2008

Christmas Day

On this day the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-Son, help round out the scene.
But if we were to select a patron for today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery.

On the day of the Lord’s birth, let’s let an unnamed, “un-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And, like Mary and the shepherds, let us treasure that discovery in our hearts.

I wish that we can resonate this message to the whole world so we may have peace in the year to come.  It's so sad to see more wars brewing like in Gaza and between Pakistan and India.

Peace to all mankind!

Presence of Jesus

I let go of everything and pray for a spirit of emptiness, compassion and love that I may be Jesus present in the world. Jesus, you are the whole reason for living and being and acting.

Practical Love

Love one another, Jesus said over and over again, and when you fail to love, forgive and reconcile with one another. Although his teachings are often mistaken as idealistic, they are the most practical.

The first minute meditations for the year 2009. What a fitting one!

Prayer to the Spirit

I pray, God, that you will continue to be with me and help me to grow in awareness of your constant abiding presence. Send your Spirit of life down on me, take pity on me, and give me strength for the days ahead.

Community of Truth

In our society, where wrong is often considered right, we need a community of truth to help us know what is right and do what is right. Our local church community can encourage us to judge what is right, choose what is right, do what is right, and live right before the God of truth.

Solidarity

Solidarity with the poor then not only keeps us grounded in the reality of poverty, injustice, and oppression; it not only helps us grow in compassion and love; it not only deepens awareness about our human dependence on God; it leads us to peace.

Acceptance in Prayer

Eternal Father, give me the strength to accept the things that I can change and the humility to accept that there are things that I cannot change and cannot fix. That life, truly, is spontaneous, which sings glory to your infinity.

In wondrous adoration, Father of Fathers, I kneel before you. In deed and in heart.

That I may never loose my adoration for thee. In this life, and in the here-after.

ONE OF OUR FAVORITE QUOTES TO LIVE BY!

St. Therese: "Why should we defend ourselves when we are misunderstood and misjudged?
Let us leave that aside. Let us not say anything. It is so sweet to let others judge us in any way they like.
O blessed silence, which gives so much peace to the soul!"

God's Test

No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it.

Another Way

The death penalty is a prime example of a vengeful act by society against one who has committed a heinous crime. Yet in killing the guilty individual, society itself takes on the role of killer. Alternatives must be applied.

The Netherlands is very liberal and democratic compared to other countries in Europe. They are very friendly, alot better than the Germans. They speak very good english also.

Consumerism Check

We must ask ourselves whether consuming vast quantities of the world’s resources for nonessentials is necessary.

Living Life Fully

Minute Meditations: A Quiet Spot in Your Busy Day!
The point of life is not to forfeit it, to lose one’s soul, and to go to hell. Rather, the point of life is to live it to the fullest here and now and forever in eternity.

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
    When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

    Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
    We have lost our thirst
    For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
    We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
    To venture on wider seas
    Where storms will show your mastery;
    Where losing sight of land,
    We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
    The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

This was the prayer of Sir Francis Drake in 1577, as he left England on the voyage that would result in the first circumnavigation of the world by an Englishman, the first English presence in California, and his knighthood.
