DILG urges LGUs to conduct activities in support of DepEd’s Oplan Balik-Eskwela
MANILA, June 1 (PNA) -- Two weeks before the start of the school year 2016-2017, Secretary Mel Senen S. Sarmiento of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Wednesday urges local chief executives (LCEs) to undertake activities in support of the Oplan Balik-Eskwela (OBE) of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Brigada Eskwela is an annual program held by the DepEd every two weeks before the official start of classes. It brings together nationwide voluntary efforts such as maintenance and contributions to public schools. This year, Brigada was launched on May 30 and ends on June 4.

"The DILG is one with the DepEd in implementing OBE that promotes the practice of shared governance, brings the spirit of education to the community level, and utilized local resources to improve public schools,” said Sarmiento.

Sarmiento issued a directive on OBE to all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors, presiding officers and members of the Sanggunians, punong barangays, DILG regional directors, and the Regional Governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

He encouraged the convening of respective Peace and Order Councils (POCs), Local Councils for the Protection of Children (LCPC) and Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (LDRRMC) to carry out necessary preparations, anticipate requirements and employ corresponding necessary measures.

LCEs are also told to convene Local Health Boards to assist other agencies, especially the Department of Health (DOH); and ensure that road networks leading to schools are secure, clean and clearly marked with signages.

“We ask our LGUs to assist the DepEd in preparing school facilities and in other necessary preparations relative to the opening of classes. Necessary ordinances may be enacted such as an Anti-Truancy ordinance to regulate the entry of uniformed students in malls, internet cafes, and other recreation centers, especially during school hours,” Sarmiento said.

He reminded LGUs to ensure that the schools and other educational institutions operate with the necessary permits and licenses; and conduct building inspections to ensure the quality and integrity of the structure of school buildings.

“Let us also prioritize and give attention to providing information campaign on responses during calamities like earthquake, fire and flood,” said Sarmiento. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
