Australian federal Opposition on Monday urged the government to adopt an independent monitoring role of the annual whale hunt in the Southern Ocean.
Two anti-whaling protest vessels of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society were involved in a confrontation with the Japanese whaling fleet in Antarctic at the weekend. The protesters were being hosed with high-pressure water cannon as they harassed the whalers.
According to Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt, the risk of tragedy during such confrontations had been foreseen and forewarned.
The government was turning a blind eye to this risk of major confrontation between the whalers and protesters, Hunt said, adding that it is time for the government to open its eyes.
"It is incumbent upon the government to take practical steps to ensure that there is an independent monitoring and an independent search-and-rescue capability," he told ABC Radio on Monday. - pna
