Importance of his conversion:Prior to Constantine's conversion, all Emperors of the Roman Empire [Imperator Romanum] were considered living deity. All emperors were regarded as divine and it was proper custom for all citizens of the empire to offer worship to the divine Caesar.
Constantine broke this pagan custom by converting to Christianity and being baptized. He professed that it was Christ, not himself, as the Lord and Creator of the Universe.
Constantine also legalized the practice of Christianity and forbid the persecution of Christians by the pagan Romans.
