Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics to Provide 1,600km Optical Fiber Cable to Singapore

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) announced today that it has been designated as the provider of optical fiber cable for Singapore Telecom's "Fiber to the Home"-project.

Starting this month, Samsung Electronics will provide 1,600km of optical fiber cable, worth US$7.5 million, to Singapore Telecom. Including this deal, Samsung's optical cable deliveries to Singapore now total 3,500km.

Singapore has one of the most modern and efficient telecommunication networks in the world. Accordingly, Samsung's successful bidding is considered to have secured more favorable vantage points in landing more future projects for telecommunication networks in the flourishing Asian market. The market size for optical fiber cable in Asia is estimated to grow 20% annually, from this year's US$1.5 billion to US$2.1 billion in 1998.

Besides Singapore, Samsung Electronics has made major optical fiber cable deliveries to Czech Republic and China. In order to satisfy the growing overseas demand, the company plans to increase its annual optical cable production capacity to 20,000km by the end of this year.
