Value yourself to prevent drug abuseMANILA (27 June) -- Value yourself, stay away from drugs.
This was the core message of the United Nations to the youth for this year's celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In a press conference held today at Manila Hotel, different national and international agencies discussed the age-old problem of drug-abuse and what must be done to contain the said menace estimated to affect three percent of the total global population.
Using the theme: " Value yourself…… make healthy choices", the UN calls on youth to consider health-related reasons why they should stay away from drugs or stop using them.
UN emphasizes that healthy choices is not only about saying "no" to drugs, but also about choosing healthy lifestyles: sports, music, theatre, civil service, and other positive activities.
Every year, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) selects a theme and launches a yearlong campaign.
In 1987, the UN General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strenghten action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
As a member of the United Nations, the Philippines through the Dangerous Drugs Board, spearheads the observance of this day every year. (PIA-MMIO)
