Something Better
By Atty. Alexander "Aleckoy" Lim
Published: December 31, 2006 by The Bohol Standard

Every year, people take time to think about the year that ended and with it wonder what the coming year will bring. This happens when the old year is about to end and the new year is about to begin.

To many people, it is a time to make new year’s resolutions supposedly because it is a good way to start the year. The practice however is like the attitude towards a good luck charm because people do not really give their heart to it.

As they grow older, people stop making resolutions because they are the same ones that were on the list the previous year. It makes them realize that they have not improved as far as the things that are on the list shows them.

One of the things that people should consider is their relationship with other people. More people give priority to other things and neglect people in the process. This is the reason why we hear of many cases of inhumanity unheard of in the past.

When people give more emphasis to things, they start losing respect and concern for people. More emphasis is given to acquiring more properties and more power. What they fail to realize is that the more that they have of these things, the more they crave for them. It is actually a curse because people do not experience the satisfaction and fulfillment that they thought these things will bring them.

There are many people who have so much in life but who cannot be together with their family for even a day without quarreling with each other. What you sow is what you reap and so if you invest in other pursuits but neglect your family, you will reap the consequences of your neglect and misguided priorities.

On the other hand, there are also people who give so much emphasis on their family that they neglect the needs of other people. They pamper their children with luxuries but could not even pay the stipulated wages of the people working for them. In fact, aside from depriving workers their year-end bonus and cash gifts, there are employers who do not even release the salaries of their workers in time.

The essence of Christianity and every religion is service for others. This is born out of the realization that there is no real happiness unless one practices the virtue of service for others. Most prophets and holy men do not own properties and material possessions but they are among the happiest people on earth.

This is a challenge for us who have more than what most people will ever have in their life. We can choose to live for ourselves and continue to live empty lives or we can choose to live for others even if we have to sacrifice some of our privileges.

If we want something better for our lives, the secret is to give something better for others. But we cannot do that unless we know how to give to those who are near to us.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
