Resolution for New Year’s Resolution
By Atty. Aleck Francis Lim
Published: December 31, 2006 by The Bohol Standard

Let’s face it. We all like to have New Year’s resolutions, whatever they are.

New Year’s Resolution is not only a common expression that it has somehow lost its meaning and effect to a person’s life.

But for those who are really serious on embarking on a life of change, whatever is it that is in need of change, improvement, or removal, there are few suggestions that, if followed, may help in making the change a reality.

When we are already used to doing something, it is not easy to abandon an old way or habit. So the following guidelines can illuminate our path to 2007.

First, we need to be realistic. Our goal to change something should be achievable, within our reach, and within our capability.

It would be frustrating if we won’t get what we want because, in the first place, our expectations are too high, and we don’t have the resources to make things happen.

Second, let us identify and be clear on what we want to change and achieve. The goal should be specific. Is it about our eating habit, work habit, or a particular lifestyle? Or is it about a certain attitude that needs to be polished? Avoid generalizing goals. Go for the details.

Third, when we have started implementing the change process, we have to concentrate on our goal and stick to it.

There are glitches and bumps along the way. The road to glory is not all roses. There are thorns. There are obstacles.

One key to reaching our goal is to keep on doing what we have initiated. Like the Energizer advertisement, let us just keep going, going, and going.

Fourth, we must be willing to make sacrifices. There is always cost in the change process. Let us remember that if our goal is noble, the benefit will always exceed the cost.

Fifth, be prepared for surprises. Life does not go in straight line. Sometimes we just have to expect the unexpected. Imagine all the possibilities that may take place when the change is already achieved. Those things that you can no longer figure out in your imagination will always come as bundle of surprises.

Lastly, we need to develop personal integrity and personal accountability. It may be a good idea if we tell somebody about our goal and ask this person to help us remind about our goal if we sway from our path.

Integrity is about being honest to ourselves and to others. It is about making our yes as yes and no as no.

Now, there are a lot of areas in life that can be the target for change.

For those who are now holding public offices, an appropriate goal for this New Year can be completing a project or program that has been neglected for some time.

For us lawyers, a New Year resolution can be that of helping the less fortunate get justice and fair trial.

The road less traveled is that road in which we stop thinking on what we get but on what we give.

May we all have a blessed New Year!

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
