Unity and volunteerism generate more jobs in Mandaue City
by Roberto M. Cabardo
Cebu City (27 June 2005) -- Proving that there is power in numbers, unity, and self-involvement are essential tools in the success of any program.
Volunteerism and unity among Mandaue citizens create more jobs. As a response to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's call to generate more jobs, the local government of Mandaue City banked on its people's involvement and initiative of organizing cooperatives.
After the shadow of the bad publicity it had because of the discovery of the mega shabu laboratory in the city, Mandaue is now a city of growth and change. through Mandaue's integrated technological and entrepreneurial cooperatives program, as people learned the value of establishing cooperatives in the area.
Coops multiplied giving the city the distinction of being one of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority's (TESDA) Kabalikat awardees.
The efficiency of the Mandaue program was also cited as one of the 25 best practices under the League of Cities of the Philippine's Best Practices Award. Another program also being lauded is the city's socialized housing program. Through the concerted efforts of various urban poor organizations such as Mandaue City Urban Poor Association (MACUPA) and the Federation of Mandaue City Urban Poor, Inc. (FEDMACUPI), the socialized housing program has been operational since 2003.
Mandaue's local government also proclaimed the month of December as volunteer month and launched the annual search for outstanding volunteers.
Through unity and volunteerism, the local government of Mandaue has succeeded in involving the people and its various industries in its delivery of basic needs and in generating jobs for the Manduehanons and many other unemployed Cebuanos. (PIA 7)
