Job seekers can avail of PESO services - DOLEBy Rose Palacio
Davao City (23 June 2005) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) encouraged job applicants to avail of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) centers which was established in all the cities and municipalities in the region.
DOLE employment division chief Ofelia Domingo said Labor XI Director Ma. Gloria Tango has instructed the employment and promotion division to undertake strategies in line with the 10-point agenda of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to generate job employment in all regions of the country.
PESO was established primarily to make available the listings of job openings, both in government, business establishment, academe and other sectors that have job vacancies.
Job seekers can inquire for any job vacancies that suits their (applicants) qualifications, Domingo said.
National data from DOLE's Bureau of labor and Employment statistics showed that migratory workers, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable persons were assisted in looking for jobs through various employment programs of the government.
Nationwide, PESO has helped thousands of job seekers as seasonal agricultural workers; Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs); thousands were also assisted through job placement; self employed assisted through the Tulong sa May Kapansanan (TULAY) which is a DOLE's flagship program for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
In a recent job encounter held in SM City mall, a number of PWDs were hired by about 20 companies who participated during the JOB's Fair.
For the period of about seven (7) years (1997-2004) more than 4,400 physically and differently-abled job seekers were benefited by the DOLE-PESO in coordination with the Kapisanan ng May Kapansanan Foundation Inc. (KKFI) headed by Dr. Maria Luisa Aportadera.
Another form of employment through which DOLE has assisted is the youth sector through the Work Appreciation Program (WAP) and the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) which aims to instill work appreciation values and ethics among young people through actual work exposure.
The DOLE's bureau of employment said PESO has consistently extended assistance to vulnerable groups despite difficult times. (PIA-RPalacio)
