Japan cautions Region 12 mango producers of pesticide misuseKoronadal City (31 January 2006) -- The government of Japan cautioned mango producers of Region 12 and other areas with mango production on the misuse of a pesticide known as chlorpyrifos.
Chlorpyrifos is the common pesticide used in mangoes for mango hoppers.
Recent findings of Japan showed that the country's exported mangoes contained excessive residues of it that could be hazardous to health.
Department of Agriculture (DA) 12 Director Abusama M. Alid said that the first detection of the misuse was in September 2004 while the second was in December of the same year.
Alid disclosed that Japan gave its last warning to our mango exporters saying that they shall ban our exports, which if left unsolved, could greatly affect the present and future mango exports of the country.
In this regard, the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) appealed to all concerned in mango production to strictly follow the approved use of chlorpyrifos. (pasaol/rafid/DA12/EJ Nacionales/PIA 12)
