Negros News, Sept 27 1999
PNP provincial director Pepito Banzon at once granted Benjamin's request to deploy a company-size escort during the transfer of the contested ballot boxes eventually on October 4.
Following the underestimated situation in its first attempt to transfer the ballot boxes, Benjamin said he now feels the necessity to raise its military escort from 15 combatants before to a company-size this October 4.
With the deployment of the company-size escort, Banzon believe that this would estabilize the situation and secure the transfer of the boxes without tension from the two parties concerned.
Comelec Chairperson Harriet Demetriou has given Benjamin the authority to use a reasonable demonstration of force in transferring the 102 contested ballot boxes from the Canalon City Hall to Dumaguete City.
The new head of the Comeles First Division gave the specific order after Benjamin consulted his superiors in Manila in the past few days following his failure to effect the transfer last Sept. 14.
Atty. Benjamin is now making arrangement, with Banzon for a company-size escort in their attempt to transfer the contested ballots.
In his consultations with his supervisors, Benjamin said he was told to opt for a company-size police escort.
Benjamin explained that they had underestimated the situation in their first attempt to transfer the ballot boxes.
The local Comelec office is getting ready for the second attempt after Comelec-Manila office now chaired by Demetiou turned down the motion for reconsideration for the second time filed by Vice-Mayor Jose Cardenas.(Richie Flores)
