Business leaders chart course of Mindanao, eye something big

Davao City (31 October 2006) -- Something big is coming out within the last two months of the year as business leaders chart the course of Mindanao.

Mindanao Business Council chair Romeo Serra during Kapehan sa Dabaw held at SM City on Monday said projects are already on the works and these involves international funding communities.

Although he did not give details Serra said there will be major shake up and the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) will play a critical role.
"A lot of things are brewing up on the ground and all of these will redound to the benefit of Mindanao," he said.

Serra who was vice president for Mindanao of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) resigned last week after the national body implemented the reconfiguration of vice governors in Mindanao from eight to five and proceeded with the elections of the reconfigurated number.

"MinBC is completely an independent organization from PCCI and PCCI has in no terms have anything to do with MinBC," he said.

After his (Serra) resignation, he said MinBC will continue to move towards the development of Mindanao which is one of the forerunners of the BIMP EAGA where plans for the next five years are now prepared.

Jayson Magnaye, MinBC executive director said the Mindanao Chamber Management Institute (MCMI) one of MinBC's "baby" will be moved out to chambers of the island who are willing to work with them.

Meanwhile DCCCII president Atty. Bienvenido Cariaga said that up to this time they haven't come up with a stand and remain disaffiliated with the PCCI.

Cariaga said there is no disadvantage on their part not being affiliated with the national chamber (PCCI) because they will no longer pay the yearly dues of P7,500.

He said they get nothing from PCCI and their earnings of P11 million for the period September 2005 to August 2006 was purely their efforts and none came from the national body.

DCCCII has to meet again with the board to study further the issue although during their board meeting last Friday at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Cariaga said that his announcement of disaffiliation got numerous support verbally and thru text from the members.

PCCI president Donald Dee and party met with the members of the board of DCCCI last week but has not reached a possible solution where the former was trying to ask the local chamber to reconsider its disaffiliation.

"As of this time, DCCCII is no longer a member of the PCCI," Cariaga said.
