Baby fights for life in a double open heart surgery
Published January 21, 2001 - Bohol Chronicle

Probably the first such case ever handled by the humanitarian Gift of Life, a Boholano baby boy will undergo a risky double open heart operation in the United States.
Infant Victor Galab III will be first operated this week while his second necessary surgery can follow later.
Red Cross Administrator Francisca Baluyot has the fragile young patient  flown tomorrow to the US via Hongkong with his father or mother and  an escort doctor.
Pat Coulaz, Gift of Life project coordinator, said time is absolutely essential because the child "may not live longer without an immediate surgery."
This assessment was relayed to Coulaz by Dr. Ramiro Cadag, Filipino coordinator in the US of the Gift of Life, and Sister Dorothy, manager of the heart program of a hospital there.
Dr. Rudy Amatong, a diplomate of the Philippine Society of Pediatric Cardiology, has diagnosed the infant for a "congenital heart disease---double inlet left ventricle (hypoplastic RV), transposition of great arteries (dilated main pulmonary artery), severe coarctation of aorta vs interrupted aortic arch."
Because the case of Galab, whose parents are Tagbilaranons, is a "high-risk"  one, the boy has to undergo a second surgery after the first operation,    said Coulaz.
Earlier, the Gift of Life prioritized the case of another young heart patient, John Wilber Diola, 5, of Cebu City for operation in the US this February.
But Galab's case is suddenly rushed because of the infant's more critical condition.
Galab will be the sixth Filipino child to benefit from the humanitarian mission of the Gift of Life and Diola the seventh.
Two more kids, a baby girl named Marie Ellaine Echalas, also of Tagbilaran City, and 11-year-old Rhon Vincent Zapatos of Talisay in Misamis Oriental, will be operated after Galab and Diola.
Each critical open heart surgery costs $100,000 or P5 million, including the expenses for medicines and recuperation stay for about three months in the US, among others.
Thus, the four cases mentioned involve a total of P20 million without a single cent to be spent by the kids' parents.
Principally raising funds for the beneficiaries is the Rotary Club - District 7250 of New York. The Gift of Life is actually a noble project of the organization.
Gift of Life president Carmello Cervino said Galab will be operated at the North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset in Baltimore.
Dr. Pepe Recitas, who, with Cadag, heads the US-based Home Reach Foundation, is equally instrumental to the humanitarian work.
Among the other workers for the Gift of Life are Dr. Gina Medina, Wenda Cadag, Richard Uy and Bong Lerias.
Baluyot, Gift of Life coordinator in the Philippines and former Rotary Club of Tagbilaran president, worked out for the successful operations in the US of five previous young heart patients from Bohol and other parts of the country.
These early beneficiaries are baby boy Marlou Baguio of Loboc; Allesandra Barion, 3, Lemery, Batangas; Joseph Vincent Borja, 5, Tagbilaran City; Ron Michael Subang, 7, Silay City, Negros Occidental; Mike Wilhinchi, 11, Cebu City; and Anna Marie Ramos, 18, Quezon City.
Also behind the life-saving mission are Rotary District Gov. Toto Cupin, outgoing Rotary Club of Tagbilaran president Dionisio Salas and the incoming club head, Wilfelda Collins.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
