All-Visayas creative writing workshop to be staged in Region 8Tacloban City (January 31 2006) -– In order to encourage the creation OF Literature in the Visayan language as a way of expanding the frontiers of Philippine Literature and to provide training for the Visayan Literary artists, the third Panagsugat, All Visayas Creative Writing Workshop will be held at the UP Visayas Tacloban College on April 15 to 20, 2006.
Ms. Merle Alunan, director of the 3rd Panagsugat, informed PIA that the workshop aims to create a venue for the discussion of Literature and Literary Studies, to encourage book production and to serve the needs of literature teachers in the Visayas.
The Workshop, she said, has two components, the writers’ program and the teachers’ grant. In the Writers’ Program, the writers will compete for the twenty slots available by sending in a set of works which may consist of one or combination of five poems, two short stories, a chapter from a novel completed or in progress, creative non-fiction, a one-act play, or an act from a longer play. The works may be written in any of the major Visayan languages ( Cebuano, Wary, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a or Akeanon), Filipino or English. Three hard copies must be sent in and a diskette in 12 points New Times Roman accompanied by a letter signifying the writer’s intention to participate.
For the Teachers’ Grant, six schools will be invited to participate preferably those running creative writing programs. The schools will nominate two participants among their Literature teachers and cover the transportation cost. The Teachers’ grant will cover the seminar fee and board and lodging. Fifteen Teachers Grant are available and will be distributed among the three Regions of the Visayas.
Ms. Alunan said that the Workshop hopes to discover the best writers of Region VIII through the Workshop. She said that the workshop will be a good opportunity to begin an inventory of the poets and storytellers of the Region.
