December 2000 - (MB) ROMANIA celebrates its National Day today. The country has had a long history of contributions to the world's cultural and scientific ideas. The ''Hamangia Thinker'' and the ''Clay Tables of Tartiara'' in 4000 BC are proofs of the country's early calligraphy, the first ever in Europe.
Eighty one years ago, the Romanians achieved their century-old aspiration - the completion of their national unitary state. Romania participated in the First World War for only one reason: to achieve this ideal of the national unity of all Romanian historical provinces. The collapse of the two multinational empires - Austo Hungarian and Tsarist - created the possibility for the Romanians in Besarabia, Bukovina, and Transylvania to achieve their freedom.
