15th Eagle Quiz highlights environment month celebration

by MS Arguelles
LEGAZPI CITY (24 June 2005) -- Preparations are in place for the holding of the 15th Eagle Quiz contest, one of the highlights for the annual observance of Environment Month this June.

The annual quiz competition which took off yesterday for the provincial elimination and on June 28 for the regional finals is under the auspices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environment Management Bureau (EMB) in Bicol, the UNOCAL Philippines, Inc. (UPI) and the Pollution Control Association of the Phils., Inc. (PCAPI) Bicol chapter.

The Eagle Quiz Contest aims to promote awareness and consciousness among the youth and students on the concept of environmental management and sustainable development.

EMB Bicol regional director Gilbert Gonzales at the launching ceremonies held Monday at the Pepper Land Hotel here, said that holding the competition annually for the past 15 years showed marked improvement among the studentry and academic institutions in joining the competition.

He said that the youth, aside from their consciousness on environmental issues and concerns now demonstrate their involvement to help address various environmental concerns.

PCAPI coordinator Amy Gonzales said that the organization has been advocating to academic institutions in the region to include in the school curricula subjects that deal with the environment to encourage students to get involved in community movements like "linis ilog/dagat".

UPI operations manager Pete Joson explained that the annual Eagle Quiz is a proven effective venue through academic competition for the youth's environmental awareness and encourages as well interests in the field of science, and on the various concepts of environmental management and sustainable development among elementary and high school students.
The DENR has launched the Eagle Quiz Contest in 1990 and since then had been an annual activity in the last 15 years. Last year, a total of 129 pupils both from elementary and secondary levels joined the contest.

The contest is open to bonafide Grade VI and fourth year high school students from public and private schools in the six provinces of Bicol.

Although the main subjects of the contest are Science and Mathematics, the focus is on matters related to environment and natural resources.

UPI corporate affairs officer Edgar Sevilla said that the competition will fall under two levels, the provincial eliminations and the regional finals dubbed as the Battle of the Eagles which will be held on June 28 at the Pacific Mall here.

The Unocal has provided close to P150,000 in cash and trophies for the winners in the provincial and regional competitions.

A P60,000 cash prize is at stake for the winners in the provincial levels in the two categories.
For the regional finals of "The Battle of the Eagles" for both categories, the 1st prize winners will receive P10,000 cash each plus trophy; 2nd prize - P5,000 plus trophy; and 3rd prize - P3,000 and trophy.

Sevilla said that the UPI would bestow the Environmental Care Award plus P10,000 in cash prize if the champions in the two categories will come from the same school.

The Unocal formerly known as PGI, a multinational firm pioneering in geothermal energy development in the country, has developed and explored the vast geothermal resources in Tiwi town in Albay, and in Makiling and Banahaw in the provinces of Laguna and Batangas. (PIA Albay)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
