Ferniz Family of Bohol
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:20:02 PM »
To start with, my Grandfather's name is Juan "Addo" Ferniz of Mansasa District, Tagbilaran City, Bohol. Married to Pia Dolotina of Dauis, Bohol.

Migrated to Bilar, Bohol and became the town's treasurer.

Sons and Daughters:

1. Nang Enyay (deceased) - I forgot her married surname
2. Ceriaco "Cocoy" Ferniz (deceased), former NBI and migrated to the US.
3. Anisia Ferniz Villanueva (deceased), migrated to Kidapawan & Davao
4. Teodoro Ferniz (deceased), former health inspector of Bilar, Bohol
5. Elpidio Ferniz - My Father, Cogon, Tagbilaran City.
6. Benjamin Ferniz (deceased), stayed at Bilar, Bohol

There are many Fernizes of Bohol, but I can only establish link from my grandfather's limbs and from the limbs of our relative the late Julio "July" Ferniz of Mansasa district, Tagbilaran City.

I have no idea if my grandfather has a brother or a sister.

Moreover, two of their cousins were among the first Filipinos to migrate and spread in the US during 1890's. For those who would like to read the full details, here's the link: http://tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com/blog-and-diary/my-lost-relatives-in-the-us-(ferniz-family-genealogy)/

If I am not mistaken, I've heard of the Ferniz family based in California. I am really intrigued to the origins of the surname Ferniz.

Is this of Spanish or Portuguese ancestry, Mr. Macky?

Thanks Bran,

I have a brother in CA and perhaps he is the one you are referring to. Or if white haired, they must be under the lineage of the first US settlers as they were mixed with Irish blood. One of the 4G's is a molecular biologist like you.

Hope your doing fine with studies.

As far as I know, Ferniz is a pure blooded Boholano. We got our surnames during Spanish era for two purposes and that is to Christianize and to streamline tax collection. There are also some Ferniz surnames in Latin countries like Argentina but not related to us.

Thank you, Mr. Ferniz. I remember reading a published paper by one of your relatives in the Journal for Molecular Biology. Impressive piece, if I may say so myself. The subject matter was very analytical and well worded. To be published in an American Journal of Molecular Biology warrants some kind of praise for it requires grant appraisal, selection criteria is also rigid, especially in a state like California (which is known for its rules of the rules!) he he.

If I am not mistaken, my Uncle Rey told me that he had a friend (you, if i am not mistaken) back in his high school days. Ferniz was the last name.

Ferniz sounds like it is originally form Basque country (northwestern Spain). As far as I know, there was a large Basque migration to Philippines due to the descrimation they received from Carlists.
