Cash Assistance Given for Poor Boholanos

By Bohol Standard

Some 11,311 poor Boholano families gets a temporary relief as the government picks them up and brings them across hard life through an expansion of the government’s conditional cash transfer (CCT) program.

The government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) implements in ten more towns in Bohol the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (Pantawid) which would enroll the households into the assistance program.

The recent development increases the number of Boholanno recipients to 39,513 in 22 towns. (not 23 as earlier reported)

At the Kapihan sa PIA Thursday, Pantawid regional information officer Aileen Lariba revealed these Bohol towns Pantawid expansions as Balilihan, Calape, Catigbian, Loon, Sagbayan, Danao, San Miguel and Talibon Batuan and Anda.

These towns add up to 2010 Pantawid beneficiary towns Alicia, Bien Unido, Buenavista, Carmen, Carlos P. Garcia, Dagohoy, Getafe, Inabanga, Mabini, Pilar, Trinidad and Ubay.

At the development, DSWD asks local government units in mentioned expansion towns to help families comply with the requirements for easy enrolment into the program.

Pantawid started in Bohol in 2009 with Danao as its pilot site. This year, more of Danao barangays get covered, says Lariba.

The recent expansion adds 259 more barangays to Bohol’s list of barangay beneficiaries and presents a rare opportunity for the poor in the country sides to work it out of the muck of poverty using a little help.

Picked as beneficiary families are those with 14 years old schooling kid, does not have a regular income and are non government employees or officials, she adds.

A beneficiary family with a child gets P300 for educational grant and P500 for health. Each family is entitled to a maximum of three children availing of the educational grant.

The grant however is dependent on the family’s compliance with the conditions of the transfer: school attendance of the kid at 85%, regular visits at the rural health and parents’ attendance at the family development sessions or pre natal and post natal care.

So far, the government has infused to Bohol a total of P178 million, cash that stirs up local economies and seeping into the community who indirectly benefit from the cash flow.

The expansion also increases the prospect of more cash to perk up local economies not just for the 10 but to its neighboring towns as well.
