"High yield of rice through the adoption of scientific farming technologies is the answer to the rice shortage in the country today."

Last Thursday, Dr. Roland Buresh, scientist of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Baños, Laguna with Marianne Samson, associate scientist, and Weng Castillo in coordination with PHILRICE, Nueva Ecija represented by Apple Suplido, Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center (APC) and the Municipal Agriculture Office met Carmen rice growers for a consultative meeting wherein a courtesy call with Municipal Mayor Manuel "Boy" Molina was made before the consultative meeting started.

During the consultative meeting, the rice growers are given the opportunity to voice their farming problems and concerns. The most grievous concern of the farm growers is the very high cost of organic fertilizer which discouraged them in tilling big areas. The farmers plead the IRRI representatives to bring these issues to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for possible solutions. If this problem remains unsolved, it will aggravate rice shortage.

The IRRI representatives brought Field Specific Guidelines on Nutrients Management for Rice.

Carmen rice growers are advised to visit Carmen FITS center located beside the Office of the Municipal Agriculture and see the FITS Center manager Susie B. Galang for additional inputs to achieve the above goal. - published by the Bohol Chronicle
