if balilihan is indeed considered the vegetable capital of bohol, there is certainly a need to expand areas in bohol that should be planted to more vegetables. if recent reports are true, bohol rates very poorly in terms of vegetable production. cebu, which has less water resources and has relatively rocky topography in contrast to bohol's better soil condition, is faring better with much more vegetables produced than bohol. vegetables thrive better in high-elevation, cooler areas. potential areas where vegetables maybe grown are carmen, dagohoy, sierra-bullones, pilar, upland areas of valencia, garcia-hernandez and jagna. and in order to gain a competitive edge in the market, bohol can focus in organic vegetable production. basically, there are two immediate benefits that can be derived from organic vegetable production: (1) organic farming inputs are much, much cheaper than organic farming inputs so it does not require a lot of capital which the ordinary farmer would surely find difficult to access anyway ; (2) organic vegetables are very healthy. they are chemical-free and thus contains zero carcinogens. (carcinogens are cancer-causing substances that chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides bring).
