da binsi...thanx for your reply! Unfortunately, I am not fluent in bisaya. Like I said, my father was the last of the family who called Bohol 'home'. All of us kids, grandkids and great-grandkids were born and raised here in the US, mostly in the metro NYC area, and consider Bohol the old country.

I posted this here since most of my Google Alerts for 'Bohol' and 'Tagbilaran' now come from this site. The old bohol.org and bohol.net mailing lists are now defunct. I started a new YahooGroup at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bohol-forum/ among the old mailing list users who are mainly seniors but it has not caught on. Unlike here, the majority of the posts were in English. Now with the likes of Facebook, Friendster and Myspace, I wonder about the viability of bbs's like this here. I'm on all 3 social networks tho I only real use Facebook because of my involvement in FANHS.

There is only one person left, my sis-in-law from Agusan Del Norte, who is fluent in bisaya in the extended family. My wife is from Lubang, Occ Mindoro and only speaks Taglish and doesn't understand bisaya. One of the reasons my son and I started the family website was to try and keep the heritage alive. Now with both our parents dead, it's all that's left to keep the roots alive...joey

Hi JTabaco,

Tubag Bohol is highly optimized for search engines. We rank No. 1 in Google for many search terms containing Tagbilaran and Bohol.

I'm glad that you visit us.

Joey, i can relate your story to the Native Americans when the whites wanted to wipe them out from the society and everything they have like culture, tradition and their own language. Yeah the whites where successfull in some way but guess what? the Government is now spending money to preserve the native languageback because it is really fading and yet it is the biggest part of the American History...

So, if possible let your children learn a little bit of our laguage or maybe our dialect...before you regret it...

Mike...Thanx for your efforts here on Tubag Bohol! You carry on the online Bol-anon traditions started by the Liems of bohol.net and the Sumobillas of bohol.org back in the 90s, crucially at the demise of those services. I began noticing the Google Alerts to your site this past year.

I've been online from work since the late 80s and at home from the early 90s. I taught my kids how to use computers and my son even became a web designer during the .com bubble until it went bust. Now he works for Verizon stinging fiber. He got us our domain name in 98 and had our website up by 99, a very expensive venture back then.

But as a bbs service, I wonder what will be your viability in these days of social networks like Facebook, Friendster and Myspace? Other than the language barrier, it's another reason I held off joining. I had been a member of dozens of bbs services in the past. That has dwindled to only a few in the last year. As to the issue of exclusivity, like being Boholano, you have that opportunity to proudly do that now on Facebook as I have done.

Regardless, I do have to commend you for having the only viable Boholano forum I've found lately on the internet that is visible to the likes of Google for the rest of us to find. I'm sure you have done a lot of work as the SEO Expert here to make that so. My congrats...joey

da binsi...I already somewhat regret it, but you have to relate my story more to the post WWII immigrants who came from every corner of this earth to this country where back then it was reputed to have its streets paved with gold and money grew on trees, especially for someone from the provincial barrios of the RP with no connections (another story) whatsoever. Being Borged or assimilated was the goal back then, and speaking with an accent other than Brooklynese was not desired.

I relatively recently found out that those 'white people' tried to implement those same policies imposed on the Native Americans on the Filipinos when our ancestors were sold down the river by Spain to the US. It took reading James Mitchner's Hawaii to learn why my parents never taught us bisaya or even Tagalog, even tho they could barely speak English, and participating in FANHS to really understand.

The Native American culture including its language is no more a bigger part of American History than the Filipino American culture and contributions to this country stretching back to before the US was even a country. Nor are those any bigger than those of the Irish Americans, Italian Americans, etc, etc, etc. Only that of the Anglo Americans is any bigger since we had to defeat the British in our Revolution to win our independence.

There is a summer program at Silliman University in Dumaguete City that I've heard of where I would have liked to send my kids and grandkids to learn the culture and conversational Visayan language for HS and college students. Heck, I'd go as a parent escort and sit in on the classes and functions so I could learn myself. Know they have them in Manila also but none I've heard of in Bohol.

I didn't even realize how much I was missing until my baby daughter was in college and joined the Fil Am student org there and invited me to some of its events. The only Filipinos I knew growing up were my immediate family. There were no others in my hood or schools. Once I was able to attend a FIND Dialogue, I realized that I had found my people, even tho they were a lot younger than me.

After searching around and trying out different orgs for folks my age, I finally found FANHS which was more geared to us multi-gens trying to maintain our Filipino heritage but who now call the US our 'home'. I had some Spanish in HS but never became conversant in it. I've made a stab a learning Tagalog but haven't got anywhere with it yet. Regrets? Some, but I have learned to live w/o it...joey

lindy...Thanx for remembering me from back then on bohol.org. The thing I did not like about those days were how personal some of those posts got. I see how they are a bit more proactive here to prevent those incidents.

Paul has joined http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bohol-forum/. Since he was one of the 1st to join, I believed I asked him if he would like to be a moderator since I was not fluent in Visayan...joey

Since an obit was never written for Natalio, I just had to write one for him for the mention of his passing in a FANHS pub:

"As a provincial barrio boy from an obscure non-political family, he managed to get a BA in Industrial Arts from the Bohol School of Arts and Trades in pre-WWII Philippines. Since he could read and write English, he was drafted into the US Army early in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1945 after WWII. He was the 1st Filipino recruited by the UN Secretariat in NY in 1946 at its original location in Lake Success on Long Island before its move to Manhattan in 1952. He was the 1st Secretariat employee to be awarded the Peace Medal for outstanding service to the cause of United Nations peace efforts on Dec 21, 1976. He managed to grandfather his VA benefits by receiving them before the passage of the Recession Act in 1946 and the US Army sent a bugler to his burial to present the US Flag to his family. Thru the VA, he bought a house in New Hyde Park, NY in 1953 that he lived in till the day he died. In it, he managed to raise 10 children, 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren here in metro NYC. He and our mom decided to become US citizens in 1999."

Some extra notes to mention here is that President Carlos P. Garcia visited our house in New Hyde Park when he was still the VP. I vaguely remember all the Secret Service out in the street and the yard during his visit when I was still a little kid back in the mid 1950s. My youngest bro Carlos was named after him and his godparents are Pres Garcia's daughter Linda and her husband Fernando Campos.

Upon his arrival in NYC in 1946, he was called on the carpet by then Philippine Ambassador to the UN Carlos Romelo who wanted to know how he got his job in the UN w/o Romelo's knowledge. Later on they became friends.

Since my father was a provincial from the barrios and not from an elite family, he and my mom were shunned by the Filipino socialites in NYC at the time prior to the 1965 influx under the new immigration laws. That's why we never knew any Filipinos when we his kids were growing up.

Since I left home in 1968 to enlist in the USAF, I did not know any Filipinos in NYC until I came back home to NYC in 1980 where upon I met my wife who was one of my sister's close girlfriends. However most of the Filipinos we knew then were the kids of people from Bohol who came to NYC post 1965...joey

Hi Kuya Joey, this is a separate topic.

I tested in google.com how we fare in Search Engine Results/Ranking. I typed Natalio D Tabaco. The result: Tubag Bohol page ranks No. 1. But if you type Natalio Tabaco only without the Middle Initial D, Tubag Bohol ranks No. 3 and 4 in Google.com

Mike...I would guess that tabacofamily.com is #1 for the Natalio Tabaco listing in google since we also use google search on our website. Because Natalio D. Tabaco is repeated many time here on tubag bohol, i can see why it rates #1. I or my son jon have not done all the suggestions from google on our website to optimize our ratings on all the search engines so you may surpass us if we keep talking about him here.  :)

Our family website is just that, mainly for family and friends. I would assume that all Boholanos worldwide would cover a much bigger audience. Since you don't seem to advertise here, and i wonder why, you should associate with the likes of amazon.com. The holiday purchases there almost covers our yearly expenses for our webhost and dns host costs.

It also helps for the few causes we support back in bohol as well as for the Fil Ams here in the US. When i get my part time job paycheck for the holidays, since i worked many xtra shifts for all the colleagues that took off for the holidays, i will paypal you a token present for the great job your doing here...joey

Mike...guess i did such a good job of configuring my firefox that it even managed to block google ads from popping up on non-google pages. When i brought up your site in IE to check out something in FrontPage, i see you do have ads on your site. Hope that's bringing in the bucks for you. Meantime back to firefox for me since i'm not a fan of IE.

BTW, I've linked you off our Phlipside-eStateside page which I'm sure you don't mind. And to keep this post on-thread, Natalio would have loved reading your site with all the bisaya on it. In the weeks before he passed on, there were times when all he could speak was bisaya and if our sis-in-law was not there, we, the rest of the family, had a hard time figuring out what he was saying...joey

I salute all of you, specially the Filipino WW2 Vets. My prayers extend to the Tabaco family in their loss. May the Lord God shine on the soul of the late Mr. Natalio D. Tabaco. And may he, like those that went before him, sing eternal praises to the Lord with all the Angels and Saints.

Amen.

Lorenzo...thanx for the condolances! Unlike my dad, most of the WWII Filipino vets have gone uncompensated by the US Govt for their service with the death of the Filipino Veterans Equity Act (S. 1315 and HR 760) in this year's Congress again. If you are a US citizen, please consider contacting your Congresspersons during this year's Congress to petition them for support once the new bills are submitted again and support the Fil Vets org of your choice pushing for this resolution...joey

Narding…A very big salamat from the entire Tabaco Family to the Tagbilaranos of metro NYC/NJ for the memorial mass for our father, Natalio Dahab Tabaco.

Jackie Bleza Tabaco, Alex Catay Tabaco, Carlos Catay Tabaco, Angie Tabaco-Moore, Fran Tabaco Molina and Esther Tabaco Costanzo would also like to thank you for the Tabilaranos Christmas Party they attend there in NJ. They had a great time from what I heard. Unfortunately I had to work and it is tough to switch days around the holidays especially on a weekend. But thanx for the invite anyway…joey

el mundo...or is it leo? I gather that you are asking about my dad's claim to owning property on the moon from the bisaya words i cud figure out? I'd have to ask my sis-in-law what exactly are you saying since she is the only person left in the entire Tabaco Family here who is literate in Visayan. My wife is literate in Tagalog if it's not too deep as she puts it. Her family still speaks Taglish which only my sis-in-law again can understand.

Like most American families here, the likes of the Republic of Bohol has become the 'old country' for us. My father was the last person in the family who still considered Bohol 'home' even tho he has lived and died in the same house in New Hyde Park he bought back in 1953. He wanted to be buried there in Bohol, but we have decided not to honor that dying wish.

Altho he was serious about that claim and has an officious looking piece of paper to back it up, it has always been an embarrassment to the rest of the family. Back in the 50s, he sent some money, maybe a buck or few, to some place that advertised getting a deed to a parcel of land on the moon.

That went along with a reservation he has from Pan Am for the 1st flight to the moon ala 2001 Space Odyssey. That so called deed has about as much validity as his now defunct Pan Am reservation. A sad joke since he took it so seriously. I hope that this statement puts to rest any truth left to such a ridiculous claim...joey

I was wondering if you have a mailing list like the one cc:’d to the TabacoFamily, rather than sending out an email with everyone’s email address addressed To, Cc or Bcc to the message. If so, please add me to your regular mailing list. If not, I could make one up for you if you would like, similar to the one I use for the Metro NY Chapter of FANHS. Please let me know…joey

It's a little late but better than never. My Condolences to your father sgt.joey. I salute WWII veterans like my grandfathers as well, although my grandfather in my mother side passed away last Dec.of 2005 and the other one is still alive, he must probably be in his 80's now, not sure. He was one of those lucky ones who escaped the Bataan Death March.

I salute WWII veterans like my grandfathers as well, although my grandfather in my mother side passed away last Dec.of 2005 and the other one is still alive, he must probably be in his 80's now, not sure. He was one of those lucky ones who escaped the Bataan Death March.
B:)...thanx! It's never too late for this. Please sign the guest book at the death notice link so the rest of the family not here on TB can share your condolances.

Like I told Lorenzo, "unlike my dad, most of the WWII Filipino vets have gone uncompensated by the US Govt for their service with the death of the Filipino Veterans Equity Act (S. 1315 and HR 760) in this year's Congress again. If you are a US citizen, please consider contacting your Congresspersons during this year's Congress to petition them for support once the new bills are submitted again and support the Fil Vets org of your choice pushing for this resolution"...joey

OT:  Sgt. Joey, you mentioned that your father was from Taloto.  Do you happen to know Graping Tabaco? g
...
grazie...We are not as close to my dad's side of the family in Taloto as we are to my mom's side there in Ubujan. Just about all of my dad's land their in Taloto was stolen by his side of the family, not that I can blame them. Who is Graping Tabaco?...joey
