Things to Consider before You Decide a Career
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:17:22 PM »
“Try this career choice standard on for size…

Will this choice allow me to:

       - Spend the greatest amount of time
       - Absorbed in activities and relationships that fill me up
       - While surrounding myself with people I cannot get enough of, and
       - Earning enough to live comfortably in the world?”

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

I guess a better formulation of this standard is:

Will this choice allow me to:

-Spend the greatest amount of time
-Absorbed in activities and relationships that
-Have nothing to do with my job!

How do we decide a good career?  Is it a decision prior to experience or a decision earned during the experience?

As the old saying goes:

"Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life".

Baluttttttttttttttt,  baluttttttttttttttt.    :)

Basing on our economic Global crisis, deciding a career seems to be secodary.  The best degree is unprofitable, any  freely offered jobs will do.

Anyone can build and call it having a good "job" career no matter what kind of job he/she is into.  Individuals driven by goals and ambitions usually say they are having a good career.  These are corporate ladder climbers and they are ambitious and aggressive.

There are also inviduals who decide their career prior to experience.  These are mostly the intellectuals.  With their orientation, they knew in advance what and when to excel in a job. If they don't like,  they quit.    Most these people end-up teaching in colleges and universities and some run their own business.  They are the boss of their own world.

But for an ordinary "striver" person like me,  a good career is something of a balance time between family, work and hobby.  It's about working smart not hard.

Fore !

Ideally, one should first know what he wants to do with his life, then find a way to support it. I admire people who claim (and apparently believe) that their job is their life, but I can't help thinking they're missing something somehow. I can't imagine holding a job--as we commonly undertand the term--being enough for one to be called worthy of a human life. Loving one's job is a good thing, but unless one is totally devoid of imagination, one certainly hasn't lived life fully if all his energies are focused on such pedestrian concerns as being promoted or making more money or, well, getting ahead in the world.

I agree with you guys, especially with the economic situation this time. Finding a job that pays the bills and stimulates the mind at the same time.

Finding a job and having a hobby in the side to milk one's creative juices is great.
In my field, there are individuals who are great physicians and do what is expected of them, and more. But when they hang their white coats in the closet and come home, they have hobbies that relieves their stress and/or stimulate their secondary interests.

I know surgeons who are artists, poets, gardners and outdoors advocates in the side.
Just an example lang.

Good point tho guys. :)
