Revolution in Las Vegas
By Atty. Aleck Francis T. Lim
Published: November 19, 2006 by The Bohol Standard

Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao said recently that his third encounter with Erik Morales is dedicated to all his countrymen, and the author of a news article commented that Pacquaiao’s “war in the ring” seems to unify a fragmented Philippines.

How true is the observation of the author. It appears that Pacquiao has this charm that removes political boundaries and puts warring political foes into amnesia when the ring idol waves the Philippine flag on Nov. 19 in Las Vegas.

We will be gripped then with hysterical excitement as our very own will prove to the world that yes the Filipino can.

It may take another generation to watch a Filipino like Manny Pacquiao who can dazzle sports enthusiasts around the world and will place the Philippines in the spotlight of HBO’s pay-per-view.

There are many aspiring Pacman but they cannot last long. The moment they taste the glory of initial feats in the ring they plunge into self-destruction by pulling wine, women (what else) as their championship belts, not to mention a burgeoning ego and swelling head.

So a Manny Pacquiao is always a tv affair to remember. It will be recorded in the pages of history to be read by millions of children in the future like the way we learned about the conquest of Flash Elorde in the elementary books.

But Manny’s fight is more than a breathtaking entertainment.

There is a sense of relief in the fact that at least once in a while in a chaotic country like ours we savor a wind of unity at a time when we need it most.

Unity is really one of the tools that can uplift our land and restore its health and vigor.

If we’re like two boatmen who paddle on the different directions, then we’re going nowhere.

Many Pacquiao will once again put the country into a moment of silence that we may be able to reflect on the fact that we’re all Filipinos and we don’t need to murder each other.

There is nothing heroic about being a boxing champion as this is a personal glory that must be credited to Pacquaio alone for he worked hard for it. The entire country did not help him become a boxing icon.

But one thing we’re sure: in a time like this in which the country is soaked with controversies and killings we need a figure to look up to, someone who has the charisma and who is believable.

This is how Manny Pacquiao becomes a very much part of the Filipino psyche today. He stands different. And he is more believable than our president. And he has more charisma than many of our congressmen and senators.

Even if he’d lose on this third battle with Morales, at least at one point in our story as a Filipino nation we have something to cheer on, we have something to talk about with sense of pride and accomplishment.

We can no longer reclaim the glory of forgotten Edsa Revolution. That has been tainted with diluted meaning of what a truly bloodless revolution is.

We need a new kind of revolution - that is a revolution of our sense of patriotism and self-realization as a Filipino nation even if this realization may take place in Las Vegas.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
