At least 14,000 jobs will be created in the agricultural sector through the Department of Agriculture's (DA) Emergency Employment and Livelihood Programs of the Government (EELPG) next year.
According to DA Regional Executive Director Gumersindo D. Lasam, not only will jobs be created through the opening up of more lands for agricultural production but also in the production of organic fertilizer, repair and rehabilitation of irrigation canals and small water impounding projects (SWIPs), and the construction and rehabilitation of farm-to-market roads and other infrastructure projects in the region.
Among the agricultural crops to be produced and continued to be produced are rice, corn, fruit, and vegetables, and fishery products.
Lasam said the program is in response to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's memorandum circular for the Cabinet secretaries to create emergency employment and to implement pro-poor programs in all the regions of the country.
The regional executive director said both the DA and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will inventory the irrigation systems and SWIPs throughout the region that need repairs and rehabilitation.
The national government has allocated some 300 million pesos for the DA regional office to implement the program, while the NIA regional office will be allotted billions of pesos for the repair and rehabilitation of the irrigation canals and those of the SWIPs, Lasam said. source: PNA
