PCIC claims released to Negros Occidental farmers increase by 47 % in 2016
BACOLOD CITY, Jan. 13 (PNA) -- The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) recorded a 47 percent increase in the total indemnity claims it released to farmers in Negros Occidental for 2016.
Jose Ma. Torres, officer-in-charge of PCIC-Negros Occidental, said in a report Friday they paid about Php53 million to 8,973 enrolled farmers in the province in the past year.
This is due to the influx of farmers who have enrolled in the program, especially under the Registry System for Basic Sector in Agriculture (RSBSA).
Torres said the crop insurance program has largely helped local farmers recover from the losses they have incurred after the prolonged dry spell.
For 2016, the indemnity was paid to farmers covering an area of 10,371.54 hectares of mostly rice farms affected by dry spell, pest and diseases.
A year before that, total paid claims was only Php28 million availed by about 6,000 farmers planting 5,260 hectares.
Torres said that under the 2016 claims, majority of the amount, or Php32 million, was received by farmers enrolled under the RSBSA with the Department of Budget and Management as partner-agency.
Under the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program, which is being implemented with the provincial government, released was Php16.8 million.
A total of Php3.8 million was paid to farmers under various insurance programs like Agrarian Production Credit Program (APCP), and Sikat Saka Program (SSP), among others.
Currently, there are 24,843 enrolled-farmers in Negros Occidental with an aggregate area of 27,157.18 hectares.
Torres said that under RSBSA alone, they have reached the target quota of Php40 million in premium subsidy for 2016.
The amount is twice more than 2015’s Php20 million target.(PNA)
