A new pond aeration system was introduced recently by Bluewater Fish Cage Manufacturing at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Research Center in Bentig, Calape.

Magno Managbanag, Jr., fabricator of Whitewater Pond Aeration System and Manager of Bluewater Fish Cage Manufacturing, a new aquaculture business venture based in Metro Manila, conducted a one-hour presentation followed by an open forum prior to the actual demonstration.

The whitewater pond aerator uses the revolutionary Aerotube diffuser manufactured by Tekni-plex of China. The new aerator costs much less than presently-used pond aeration systems and boasts of energy cost savings of up 75%. It produces very fine bubbles that are generated through the countless micropores in the tube. It is acclaimed to be most efficient in transferring oxygen into the water since the diffuser grid is submerged under water. As the fine bubbles slowly rise, it acts as a very effective airlift system as it sucks the water from the bottom of the pond while at the same time transferring oxygen into the water the bubbles are in contact with. As fine bubbles accumulate at the surface, the water is then pushed forward by the back and side walls of the frame causing water to circulate around the fishpond. A 2,500-square meter pond will be fully-aerated in less than an hour using a single diffuser grid driven by a 1/2 horsepower regenerative air blower. The demonstration is a first in Bohol Province since the aerotube is newly-introduced in the country. This diffuser was launched in the US in 2007 and is now manufactured by Tekni-plex of China as the sole factory and distribution center for Southeast Asia. There are only seven facilities producing aerotube in the world; five being in the US, one in Canada and another in China. These facilities use 10,000,000 pounds of shredded rubber tires annually in the process of manufacturing the aerotube.

The advantages of using Whitewater pond aerator are summed up as follows: reduction of energy costs by up to 75%; lack of moving parts hence, very low maintenance alternative; maintains higher dissolved oxygen (DO) levels; allows for higher stocking densities; higher feeding rates; more frequent feedings; faster growth and reduced feed conversion ratio (FCR); and, low start up and replacement costs. The bottom line of this new aeration system is that fishpond owners incur lower equipment and energy costs while at the same time, improve their earnings.
