Baclayon municipal officials led by Mayor Alvin Uy and V-Mayor Marilyn Uy become part of the 8,500 runners participating in the Fun Run for the Dolphins of Pamilacan Island which blasts off this morning in Taguig City, Metro Manila.
In the forefront of the benefit sports event are the Municipality of Baclayon, Condura and the Ayala Foundation and the Bezo Recreational Aquatic Activities of Bohol, Inc. The appliance maker is on its third year as sponsor of the fun run to create awareness on how incredibly-rich Philippine marine life is and takes initiative on helping conserve it.
In 2008, about 2,000 ran the Condura Run for the Tubbataha Reef. The year after, 6,000 ran for the whale sharks.
This time around, a staggering 8,500 are running for the dolphins of Pamilacan.
According to Joel Uichico, executive director of BRAABO, all the eight elected Sangguniang Bayan of Baclayon and 12 barangay captains will join the fun run. BRAABO is the livelihood arm of the Ayala Foundation which is doing an outreach program in Baclayon with protecting the dolphins as one of its concerns. Bea Zobel, Jr. is the power behind the foundation activities in Baclayon.
In a special section that appears in today’s issue of the Philippine Star, an article entitled 8,500 run for the dolphins, it says through running, it shows how people can make a positive difference, how each step multiplied by more than eight thousand can make the Philippines a better place.
Fifty pesos from every paying runner, plus any profits the run earns will be used to purchase materials needed to construct a floating wharf to protect the dolphins of Pamilacan Island. Pamilacan is hailed as a marine life sanctuary, where a rich diversity of creatures thrive, and this is done in cooperation with the Ayala Foundation, municipal government of Baclayon and BRAABO.
Apart from donating funds to this year’s beneficiary, the run aims to promote Pamilacan as an ecotourism destination and to help it develop as a premier tourist hotspot in the Philippines. - Sunday Post
