Press Release: Cong. Relampagos Seeks Help of NGOs, Private Sector for Marawi Rehab

Bohol First District Representative Rene L. Relampagos has underscored the importance of land and housing development in achieving economic and social progress, stressing the right of every Filipino to affordable, safe, decent and resilient shelter.

Speaking at the 7th Monthly Business Meeting of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Association (CREBA) at Makati City last July 27, 2017, he urged the real estate industry and all stakeholders to help in the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City and other areas affected by the ongoing armed conflict between government forces and the Maute group.

“Let’s work together in restoring hope, peace and dignity in Marawi City and other affected areas. The most vulnerable sector in need of housing today is the sector of the internally displaced persons or the bakwits. And nowadays when we think of bakwits, the first that comes to mind are the victims of the ongoing insurgency in the City of Marawi. The rebuilding of Marawi, believe me, is not a task of the government alone. In all success stories, partnership between and among stakeholders, coming from both the private and the public sectors, are essential,” Cong. Relampagos stressed.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on the conflict in Marawi City, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has reached 351,168, with the number of IDPs staying at evacuation centers (ECs) at 17,389 and the number of IDPs living with family/friends at 333,779.

He added, “Our Maranao brothers and sisters need to know that people care for them. When a person is in their lowest, the sweetest help are those coming from complete strangers. It doesn’t matter whether the help be big or small, what matters is that there is help. This we experienced during the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Bohol in 2013. The surviving families of the members of the military and the police force who fought and died in the Marawi clash are also worthy of consideration as beneficiaries of your housing aspirations. After all, they lost their lives fighting for peace and security in our country.”

He further emphasized that the entitlement to have adequate housing is a right and not a privilege that is given to all, not just to a few. “The housing component of every civilization is not complied with after the construction of four walls and a roof to shelter a family. It is building houses that affirms and respects human dignity that fulfills this promise. Indeed the task of building homes for every Filipino is daunting but all dreams start with a single step and what best way than to start with those who need the most help,” Cong. Relampagos concluded.

CREBA is the Philippine umbrella organization of the real estate and housing industry composed of property developers, builders, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers of construction materials, real estate service practitioners and other professionals and entities engaged in 70 allied fields. CREBA’s “Five-Point Agenda for Housing” includes the vision of “A Home for Every Filipino” and targets the construction of 500,000 housing units per year to address homelessness within a period of 20 years.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
