Boho Gov Edgar Chatto Moves to Save Danajon Reef

THE provincial government has intensified efforts to save the Danajon Double Barrier Reef (DDBR) that lies off the northern coastal areas of 10 municipalities following a series of consultations conducted earlier in Cebu, Leyte and Southern Leyte that comprised the location of the reef.

Last week, it was the turn of Bohol officials on the briefing and presentation of the plan on Reef’ management body composed of coastal municipalities during a gathering that was called by the provincial government led by Gov. Edgar Chatto.

The provincial government and the Coastal Conservation for Environment Foundation (CCEF) presented to the body, including Trinidad Mayor Roberto Cajes and Talibon Mayor Restituto Auxtero and representatives of the towns concerned, the Danajon situation and the need for the Memorandum of Agreement between the stakeholders during the meeting held at the Governor’s Mansion.

The said MOA spells out the stakeholders’ duties and responsibilities and funds in running the management body over DDBR in carrying out activities, programs for the protection of the reef.

The meeting of the stakeholder-towns reminded the local government units lawmakers concerned to fast track the authorization by way of an approved Resolution authorizing their municipal mayors to sign the said MOA slated on May 18, 2012 in time of Month of the Ocean celebration this year.

Gov. Chatto was able to catch when the meeting was about to end and huddled with the officials and the CCEF representatives regarding the Danajon Reef issue.

DDBR is situated along Northern Bohol, southernmost of Camotes Sea. It has an approximate size of 94 km long on the east-west 9 to 25km wide covering about 695 coastal kms. Total area: 214,268 hectares; 3 big reefs: Cabul-an – Caubyan – 14,300 has.; and Dawajon from11 to 23 kms each; Calituban is inner part: Total area – 46,380 hectares.

It covers the coastal towns of Bien-Unido, Buenavista, Calape, Clarin, Inabanga, Getafe, Pres. CPG, Tlaibon, Trinidad, Tubigon, and Ubay, all of Bohol; Cebu --- Lapulapu city, Cordova; Leyte --- Matalom, Bato, Hilongos, and Hindang, Baybay City; southern Leyte – Maasin City

Its rich resources include, 40 islands/islets; mangroves, 5,250 has.; seagrass, more than 500 has.; man-made mangrove forest, 1,786 has.; hard coral species, 211 (205 of which are coral reef-building species); 6 seagrass species out of 16 found in the country (2004 Silliman University survey); Four (4) species of seahorse out of 7 thrive in the country found in Danajon, available data said.
