Bohol: Tourism Model For Cordillera Region
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:21:15 PM »
The unprecedented growth of tourism in the province captivated public and private tourism leaders in Baguio City and the adjacent provinces during the Regional Tourism Conference held at the Convention Plaza, Hotel Supreme in Baguio City last Thursday.

Tourism Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr. of DOT promotions and planning bureau keynoted the confab under his theme "Tourism Directions for North Philippines." He asked the regional tourism pillars of the region to closely look into how Bohol made it in the tourism map, both here and abroad.

In fact, NEDA Asst. Regional Director Leon Dacanay and Nativdad Sugguiyao of the Kalinga Provincial Tourism Council who were among the reactors of the forum said that Bohol's tourism boom can strongly be attributed to the

leadership of Gov. Erico Aumentado who made the "unprecedented lift" after he mustered support from the three Bohol congressmen and other local officials.

"If only we can adopt your governor (Aumentado)," they said.

The sudden increase in tourist arrivals in the province attracted the event organizers to invite Gov. Aumentado and Provincial Tourism Council chair Peter Dejaresco to speak on the "Bohol Experience" in the development of tourism.

Prov'l. Administrator Tomas Abapo Jr. represented the governor during the forum attended by some 200 tourism industry players, from both the public and private sectors of the region.

In his address, Abapo stressed that the direction of the provincial governance is to sustain the eco-tourism development of the province which the Aumentado administration considers as a "key to poverty reduction."

He cited the creation of offices at the provincial government which propelled the tourism development, namely, the Bohol Tourism Office, the Bohol Environment and Management Office, and the Bohol Investments and Promotions Center. The mission and vision of the province guided the development direction here. He cited the rapid improvement of Bohol's economic standing after it was raised from No. 7 in the list of "poverty stricken" provinces to No. 52.

For his part, Dejaresco cited the strong cooperation between the government and private sectors which was sealed some six years ago when the private sector got convinced on the seriousness and boldness of the provincial governance in promoting Bohol as a prime tourist destination.

The PTC chair recalled that the "inspiring experiences" of Boracay and Cebu guided the development of Bohol tourism after the council invited tourism practitioners from the two successful tourist destinations in the country.

Also cited was the bullish promotional efforts through international travel marts in Japan, Korea, Europe and the United States where the private sector actively participated.

The infrastructure support of the provincial government like the concreting of roads inspired the private sector to support the development thrust.

The success story of Bohol tourism was picked as a major highlight of the weeklong observance of the "3rd Wow Philippines Cordilleras' Best" spearheaded by DOT-CAR Purificacion Suanding-Molintas.
