DTI official encourages NIT to improve ICT courses

Naval, Biliran (August 30 2005) -– In order to ensure that students taking up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) courses will land employment in establishment catering to ICT business in the country, Regional Director Cynthia R. Nierras of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 8 encouraged school officials of Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) to improve ICT courses.

The message of Director Nierras was made during the opening of the Agro-Industrial Trade Fair which is the kick-off activity of the 33rd NIT Charter Anniversary Celebration that starts from August 30 up to September 3, 2005.

The remark made by Director Nierras to improve ICT courses of the school was based on her observation during the recent jobs fair conducted by Convergys in the region.

Convergys is a business entity engaged in call center operation nationwide.Call center operation is now the growing business in the country that hires mostly graduates of ICT.

She said that employment opportunity in ICT is a big demand this time with the emergence of many ICT businesses in the country. Furthermore she said that Convergys is set to hire 10,000 workers in a span of five years.

According to Dir. Nierras, out of the 1,790 applicants during the jobs fair only 21 applicants were employed.out of the more than 200 applicants who passed the three screening conducted by Convergys.

The result shows that the graduates of ICT in the region lack the skills and capabilities or the competency requirement before one can be hired as employee in a call center.

In order to answer the problem on low capability of ICT graduates in region 8, Dir. Nierras proposed that graduates of colleges taking up ICT courses must still undergo a three-month course design to enhance ICT knowledge, skill and capability that will give them big chance of employment.

The proposal to enhance the knowledge of ICT graduates is in coordination with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) that provides technical assistance to said three month enhancement course.

Dir. Nierras also invites the NIT administration as well as to all the colleges and universities in the region offering ICT courses to develop programs intended to improve the quality of ICT graduates. She further encourages to let their ICT graduates undergo short term courses especially those conducted by TESDA in order to give them a big chance of employment. (PIA Biliran)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
