DepEd names national winners of ‘Barkada Kontra Droga’ program
MANILA, Jan. 8 (PNA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) recognized five schools nationwide for their efforts in combatting drug abuse not just in schools but also in their own communities.
DepEd, in collaboration with the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), announced the national winners of the search for outstanding “Barkada Kontra Droga†(BKD) program implementers in secondary schools for School Year (SY) 2014-2015.
Kirayan National High School from Iloilo Province bagged the first prize, trailed by Agusan National High School in Butuan City for the second prize, and Salay National High School in Misamis Oriental claimed the third prize.
Runners-up were Oriental Mindoro National High School (Region IV-B) and Tabuk National High School (Cordillera Administrative Region), respectively.
The schools were recognized for being actively involved in promoting and maintaining a fully drug-free environment in the school, home, workplace, and community.
The “Barkadahan†concept involved a collective action among students, faculty, and school administrators in initiating active responses, increasing community awareness and participation in anti-drug abuse.
The Office of the President (OP) through the DDB institutionalized the “Barkada Kontra Droga†Program in compliance with the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
It started off as a series of launching seminars as a preventive education and information program which eventually evolved into a search for the best BKD chapter open to all secondary schools nationwide.
The monetary prizes for the winners will be shouldered by OP-DDB and will be in the form of checks to be deposited under the name of the schools.
Plaques of recognition will also be awarded to the winners.(PNA)
