TESDA marks 11th anniversary with significant milestones
Catbalogan, Samar (30 August 2005) -- There is a significant increase in the awareness of technical/vocational Tech Voc Programs, this was bared by Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Samar Provincila Director Cleta Omega.
In the weekly PIA program "Huruhimangraw" Omega disclosed that TESDA has turned 11 this year. TESDA is a product of the merging of agencies namely National Manpower and Youth Council (NMYC), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Apprenticeship Program, and the DepEd's Bureau of Technical Vocational Education (BTVE).
The lady director outlined the important milestones of TESDA's 11th year of existence. Among its significant contribution to education and youth opportunity is the availability of scholarships for Tech Voc courses from Private Education Student Financial Assistance (PESFA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Omega also lauded the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Motiong and Basey and NGO PLAN Philippines for giving scholarships to poor but deserving youths. Close to a hundred scholars are presently enjoying the said benefits.
Randy Enarciso, 17 and Herman Basa, 22 both out of school youths from Tarangnan, Samar are both PLAN scholars enrolled at TESDA Regional Training Center for computer technician courses. Both are grateful with the opportunity given by PLAN and TESDA. Presently, they are now on apprenticeship in Catbalogan's internet district.
As for awards and recognition, the comely director cited one Rebecca Pascual who was a gold medalist in Ladies Dressmaking in a Skills Olympics held in 2001. Pascual has then joined the Samar State University as an instructor. Another awardee Edgedio Ignacio of TESDA Samar was a regional model employee in 2002 and the Best Community Training Employment Coordinator (CTEC) Purisima Sarzata from the Calbayog LGU in the year 2002 and 2003. All these recognition have given TESDA Samar an inspiration to strive for excellence, the lady director beamed.
Another grand project it will embark on is the Youth Profiling for Starring Careers in Christ the King College in Calbayog City. The program will assess skills and potentials of graduating high schoolers to guide them as to the courses that best fit them.
To give inspirations to TechVoc advocates, TESDA will also venture into the lives of TESDA graduates gainfully employed or are self-employed to share what good news is there to attract more techvoc takers among the youth.
Finally, Omega was beside herself with joy as she fondly remembers, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's SONA when she mentioned issuing Executive Order 358 which means that hours spent in vocational training can be credited towards a college degree. This, Omega said, is a milestone most noteworthy for finally, their efforts have gained support and recognition from the highest executive of the land. (PIA-Samar)
