Cebu City resumes dumping trash in north Cebu town landfill

CEBU CITY, Dec. 29 (PNA) -- The Cebu City Government has resumed dumping its garbage in the private landfill in Consolacion town in northern Cebu, six months after Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña rejected its use.

Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera said Thursday the Asian Energy Systems Corp. (AESC), the owner of the Consolacion sanitary landfill, has confirmed that the city’s newly hired private hauler, Jomara Konstruckt Corporation, has again dumped waste in their landfill facility in Barangay Pologan, Consolacion last Tuesday.

Jomara in under contract with the city to clear all garbage dumped at a transfer station in the South Road Properties (SRP) from Dec. 27 to Dec. 31 for a fee of PHP1,375 per ton.

Garganera said the fee turned out to be more expensive than the hauling fee paid to AESC during the term of then mayor Michael Rama that was questioned by Osmeña.

AESC was the private hauler tasked by the Rama administration to collect the city’s trash and dump it into its landfill facility for a tipping fee of PHP700 per ton.

But when Osmeña took the helm of the city government in July, he reopened the Inayawan dump site on the grounds that garbage hauling deal between the city and AESC was anomalous because it was not covered by a contract and that the city paid too much in hauling fee.

Osmena also refused payment for the PHP32 million in tipping fees that AESC was collecting from the city.

Garganera, who heads the city council’s committee on environment, said that even if the city has now ended using the Consolacion landfill again, he still would want to just watch how Osmeña would handle this situation since “they had just started” in solving the city’s garbage dumping problem.

“My concern is that they will stop dumping at SRP,” he said.

Garganera filed the case that led to the permanent closure of the city’s 15.4-hectare landfill which has outlived its usefulness. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
