Ombudsman leads national dialogue on the UNCAC country review report
10 December 2012
About 200 representatives from the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Departments of the government, non-government organizations, private sector, academe, civil society groups and media are sent to affirm their commitment to implement reforms in the country’s anti-corruption strategy during the National Dialogue and Action Planning on the United Nations Against Corruption (UNCAC) Country Review Report.
The event which is led by the Office of the Ombudsman is being held on December 10-11, 2012 at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.
As a State Party to the UNCAC, the Philippines is tasked to “take the necessary measures, including legislative and administrative measures, in accordance with fundamental principles of its domestic laws, to ensure the implementation of its obligation under this Convention.†Hence the Philippines has already completed the first review cycle of UNCAC, and is now in the stage of finalizing its Country Report.
The Dialogue is for validation of the Philippine Country Report and crafting of a five-year National Anti-Corruption Action Plan to address the identified gaps and challenges. It aims to establish local ownership of the Report and to draw out political will and commitments of the policy makers, implementers, private sector, as well as the advocacy support of the academe, media, civil society groups and the public at large in addressing the gaps and recommendation on the review of the Philippine compliance with the UNCAC.
The two-day activity is part of the country’s weeklong celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day on 09 December 2012.
The Office of the Ombudsman led yesterday the “March To Righteousness,†which was participated in by an estimated crowd of 10,000 coming from various government agencies, civil society groups, and non-government organizations, from the Ombudsman Building in Quezon City to the Quezon Memorial Circle where the participants vowed to help in the fight against corruption.
The Philippines signed the UNCAC in December 2003 and it was subsequently ratified by the Philippine Senate on 08 November 2006.
