Christmas came early for residents of West Tower condominium in Barangay Bangkal, Makati City.

Ruby Chuaunsu, an apartment owner and head of the condominium’s housekeeping committee, said they considered the tracking down of the source of the leak that has been seeping through the basement of their building for the past four months an early Christmas gift.

“We’re very happy when we heard about the latest development; it gave us hope. God is really so good,” she told the Inquirer.

“To me, this is also a nice birthday gift,” added Chuaunsu, who is celebrating her birthday on Monday. “The unit owners were so happy that we feel like celebrating, we're actually holding a post-Halloween event next week to celebrate the good news.”

Besides the Chuaunsus, some 60 to 80 families and a number of businesses holding office in the condominium were affected by the oil leak.

In July, the city government shut the building down and ordered the tenants' evacuation following the accumulation of a mixture of water and oil in the basement. Fire officials also declared the building a “ticking time bomb.”

On Thursday, the First Philippine Industrial Corp. (FPIC), operator of the pipeline that transports about 60 percent of Metro Manila’s fuel needs from a refinery in Batangas to the Pandacan oil depot in Manila, finally acknowledged that the leak was coming from its facility.
