Three kids undergo P45M heart surgery in FebruaryPublished January 4, 2001 - Bohol Chronicle
Valentine's Month, February, will not just be heart and love but value of human life for three children---one of them a baby girl---who must undergo open heart operations in the United States.
Their hospitalization and recovery could cost a whooping sum of over P15 million principally at a combined expense of the philanthropic Rotary Club of New York - District 7250 and the Gift of Life Foundation.
Red Cross Administrator Francisca Baluyot, past president and director for international services of the Rotary Club of Tagbilaran, identified the youngest patient as Marie Ellaine, one-year old, of this city.
The two other beneficiaries of the humanitarian mission are John Wilber Diola, 5, of Cebu City and Rhon Vincent Zapatos, 11, of Talisay in Misamis Oriental.
They are suffering from tetra log fallout, which refers to a hole on the lobe of the heart, said Baluyot, who is also the Philippine coordinator of the Gift of Life - New York.
US-based Dr. Ramiro Cadag coordinates for the Gift of Life - Philippines in the United States while co-leading there with Dr. Pepe Recitas the Home Reach Foundation, a civic group also saving critical patients
The boy Diola is set for operation in February at the Montifiore Hospital in Bronx, New York. He will be accompanied by his mother, Marilyn.
The baby girl Echalas and kid Zapatos will follow soon for operations at the Bellevue Hospital, also in New York.
Zapatos' case was recommended to Baluyot by Misamis Rep. Oscar Moreno, now one of the solons prosecuting the impeachment of Pres. Estrada.
